SYNOPSIS

Jacob

As a rule, men don’t grow up believing in a happily ever after. We don’t believe in meeting the love of our lives; or the white picket fence, and 2.5 children. Every man thinks that those stupid dreams or fantasies are just nonexistent shit until it happens to them. We should have been forewarned.

I wish I was prepared for someone to appear in my life and change all my priorities. I suddenly wanted that fence and children. The part of meeting the love of my life became very real, but I wasn’t ready for suddenly losing it all, and my life plummeting into this shithole forever.

The heartbreak of losing your soulmate is one of the worst pains you will ever live with. I should campaign and warn the young people. Vaccinate against love because if you lose it, you could lose yourself for the rest of your life. The burden on your back will forever mark you and wither away your soul, darkening your days and the rest of your natural life.

This isn’t false advertisement or a dramatic display of one bitter soul.

Pria

I fought by my mother's side until her last breath, and tried to help my father until his last memories dissipated. My sister is the last one standing, but her life is a miracle that can end at any given moment. All my life I’ve never been alone, but always felt lonely.

Today, my options on how to live my life are endless, yet my heart and my best friend limit them. Stay in Seattle, close to the one person that will never let me inside his world.

The thug, as mom would've called him. A man with a bad boy attitude and a heart bigger than the ocean.

EXCERPT

Dana stared at the letter in her hand, all the blood rushing from her face. Her fingers began to tremble and the paper nearly slipped from her grip.

She sank down in the chair.

“Hey, what’s up?” her roommate Elli asked, as she walked past and slumped on the couch across from her. “You’re white as a ghost.”

“I . . . uh . . .” Dana glanced up at the slim, tall blonde who shared the small, two-bedroom apartment with her. It was a bit dumpy, but it was only a ten-minute walk from the university. “It’s from my mom.”

“Oh? What does the bitch have to say?”

Dana cringed a bit at the way Elli referred to her mom, feeling disloyal to her family for not sticking up for her, but at this precise moment, she didn’t really feel like defending her mother. And Elli was only going on the incidents she’d witnessed.

“She . . . ” Dana sucked in a deep breath. “She says I’m cut off.”

“Cut off? You mean, she won’t be giving you the money you need for you Masters?”

Dana shook her head. “She thinks it’s a waste of money and time. She thinks I should go out and get a real job, and learn to stand on my own two feet. She won’t even co-sign on another student loan.”

Dana gazed at Elli, her chest compressed under the weight of her crushed dreams. “I don’t know what to do,” she murmured helplessly.

Elli pursed her lips. “I think I have an idea, but promise me you’ll keep an open mind, because it’s a little bit crazy.”

EXCERPT

My eyes sprang open, and blue flames shot from my hands into the sky. Air rushed in and out of my lungs like a whirlwind. The trees blew sideways as I exhaled.

Lightning flashed overhead. The ground rumbled at my feet. Earth essences flooded through me, mixing with the wind and fire. Energy shattered across the treetops and raced over every leaf and branch like lightning bolts.

“Keep control of the energy!” Azrael shouted above the sound of the electric wind.

I had the power of fire, wind, earth, water, life, spirit, and even death racing through me. It was like trying to wield seven long whips that sparked when they clashed together. I had to unite them and gain control. I wrangled the seven elemental streams of energy together. The elements blew out of my hands in white waves. The leaves on the trees erupted in a celestial firestorm. Starfire illuminated my skin and ran through my body like the blood in my veins.

Chaos surrounded me, then everything went still and silent as if time itself stopped.

Gentle ethereal light curved and swirled around my body like a slow whirlpool. A gown of shimmering pearl silk cloaked the contours of my body. The heavenly cloth sparkled at my slightest movement. Pink, blue, green, and gold aurora waves added to the creation pallet floating around me. I touched the energy orb surrounding me like a cocoon. It rippled in soft waves and let out a gentle soprano melody.

“The energy is moving too fast,” Korban shouted. I could hear his words, but it was as if he was in a dream far away.

“She’s consuming all the energy of Earth.” Orion’s urgent voice grew faint. “She’s becoming a weapon, Azrael. You have to stop her, or she will never be able to touch another mortal again.”

The sound of ocean mist brushed past my ear like a whisper. Perfect round drops of water stood suspended in the air, reflecting the light of many stars and worlds. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Nothing on Earth could compare with the divine celestial colors and lights. I reached out and touched a droplet. A delicate indigo and gold flower blossomed from the tiny element. The creation process became so clear. I immediately understood how to form life with a single touch.

I reached out and touched another sphere of water. The inhabitants of an unknown culture, several galaxies away, flashed through my mind. In a split second, I saw every life form on the planet and felt I knew each one individually.

Azrael sounded closer when he said, “Her energy ‘tis too great. I can’t reach her.”

“You can, Azrael, and you must,” Orion shouted. “Korban is dying.”

I pulled my hand back. What had I done? I didn’t know how to step out of the creation cocoon spiraling around me. “Azrael?” I whispered. My body tensed and the light whipped violently. I took in deep breaths, searching for Azrael in the tempest of energy.

A hand shot through the waves of heat and grasped mine. Azrael stepped into the cocoon. His silver eyes reflected down on me like twin mirrors. He held my glowing hand to his lips, kissing each fingertip.

I was shocked at how different, but beautiful, my hand looked pressed to his lips. Shimmering iridescent light wrapped around our bodies.

“‘Tis your true form. What you look like without your human body,” Azrael answered.

“Did I destroy my human body?” I asked.

Azrael shook his head. “No, but you need to come back now or you will not be able to stay here on Earth. We need you, and the longer you are in this form, the more your mortal body dies.”

EXCERPT

“How do you do that?” I asked, finding my voice. I looked around the dance floor, at all the people frozen like 3D photographs. It didn’t make sense that I wasn’t scared by the situation at hand, but fear didn’t factor into my emotional state at all. I also wondered what it would be like to walk through the crowd and note all their bodily contortions and facial expressions, but I held back. At the moment I was more interested in hearing what this man had to say. “How did you make everything stop?”

“As to how I do what I do, I can only tell you that I do it. I know someone that can explain the how better than I. As to this,” he waggled a finger toward the still figures in the room, “this is all you. I can only help you … amplify what you had inside you to begin with.”

It was my turn to laugh, but it was humorless and harsh. “What are you talking about?”

“You have felt different all your life, no?”

“Sure. But doesn’t everybody?” I answered with an eye roll and looked around the room again. “Look at these morons. They’re all playing dress up, hiding their real selves from each other. But the truth is they’re desperate to find someone to love them. Hoping they’ll be important to someone, anyone, because they sure as hell don’t feel important to themselves. Hoping they’ll actually matter. Hoping that someone can take away the emptiness they feel every time they look in the mirror.”

He shook his head. “You are talking about yourself, not them. And they are not all like that. They are not the lifeless paper dolls you think they are, not even the ones trying so hard to stand out. And neither are you.”

His words confused me, and I felt myself growing angry. “Who are you?” I didn’t like the things he made me feel anymore, and I longed for the simplicity of the liquored-up daze I’d enjoyed earlier. I wanted to run away from him, but in the same moment I realized that nothing could have made me turn away from this strange man.

“My name is Kasimir Korsak. My friends call my Kasey. I would very much like to include you in that group.”

I shook my head. “If you know so much about me, you would know that I don’t have friends.” I put as much disdain into the last word as I could. I might want to find out more about the things that were happening, but that didn’t mean I trusted him. “Besides, what possible reason do I have to believe anything you say?”

His eyes were still steady on mine when he spoke. “You already trust me, Blue. You do not want to admit it because I am a stranger, but deep down you believe me because you hear truth in my words. You look around the room and see truth. You are different. Special.” He held out his hands, palms up in a gesture of openness. “You are like me, only you have not learned how to use your abilities yet.”

Abilities? I gaped at him. What the hell does that mean?

We stood in the strange, echoless silence, neither of us taking our eyes off the other. I wanted his words to be true. I wanted the differentness I’d always felt to be something special, wanted it with an urgency that pierced through the numbness. In the few moments I’d spent with this man I’d felt more emotions than I’d felt in years.

The realization finally brought forth fear, but it also brought excitement, and I wanted more. If his words were true, and he and I were alike, maybe that meant I actually belonged somewhere.

“I can show you if you let me.” He smiled again and as we stared at one another, thoughts that weren’t mine raced through my head.

Give me a chance to show you. There are others like us. You do not have to be alone anymore.

“Why should I?”

“What are your options?” He smiled. “Someone once said, ‘I may never be what I want to be, what I ought to be, but how will I know unless I try?’ That is all I am asking you to do, try.”

“Who said that?”

He grinned wider. “A superhero.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re kidding, right? This isn’t a fucking comic book.”

MY THOUGHTS

I WAS SO EXCITED TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW THIS BOOK. I LOVE BOOKS THAT HAVE CHARACTERS WITH POWERS! I DID HAVE A ROUGH TIME GETTING INTO THIS BOOK FOR THE FIRST 10 PAGES OR SO. IT SEEMED TO BE A BIT SCATTERED IN MY OPINION. AROUND THE PAGE 10 MARK, IT WAS ALMOST LIKE THE AUTHOR HAD TAKEN A BREAK AND THEN CAME BACK WITH GUSTO, BECAUSE EVERYTHING CLICKED AND STARTING WORKING TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY. THERE WAS SOME AWESOME POWERS MIXED IN WITH UNRESOLVED ISSUES, AS WELL AS AN OUTSIDER IN A GROUP OF A RAGTAG "FAMILY". OF COURSE, THERE IS ALSO A BIG BADDIE TO BEAT. THE DRAMA, THE FAST-PACE, BADASSNESS, AND A BIT OF ROMANCE TIED IT ALL UP WITH A POWER-FILLED-BOW! I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK AND CANNOT WAIT UNTIL I CAN GET MY HANDS ON BOOK 2!!!
I GIVE THIS BOOK 4.5 STARS!

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?

I was a bit precocious as a child, reading at a very young age, and an only child. My books were my best friends and I’ve been making up stories as far back as I can remember. I don’t think it ever occurred to me to NOT want to write. I’ve always described my thoughts as a play or movie I get to direct, and the natural progression of that is to put them down on paper.

What genre(s) do you write in?

Although I have manuscripts for a multitude of genres, I seem to always come back to science fiction
and fantasy. I really enjoy comic books, graphic novels, and Noir fiction. There’s an intrinsic need inside me that searches for a simpler world, one where heroes exist. Again, it was a natural progression for me to write those kinds of stories since it’s what I love.

What was the first book you ever wrote?

I wrote a book of poetry when I was around ten years old. I’d share some of it with you but I’m not sure what happened to it (maybe my mom still has it!). It was probably terrible, though! I continued to write a lot of poetry through my youth, and I still write poetry and prose fairly regularly. It’s a very open form of expression and I enjoy the depth it can bring.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?

That’s an easy question. The Blue Effect, hands down. It has everything I love in a story.

And what makes this your favorite? A certain scene, character, plot?

The main character, Blue Brennan, is near and dear to me. I love everything about her. If you ever
wanted to know about me, Rose Shababy, all you have to do is read her book and you’ll find me right
there, albeit a bit exaggerated. Her inner dialogue is mine, her fears and anxieties are mine, her hopes
and dreams are mine. Writing her was a catharsis, and gave me a new appreciation for the person I am. Through her, I learned to love myself a little more.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

I work a day job, so I don’t really have a daily routine. I try to set aside at least one full day on the
weekend to write, sneak in little tidbits at work, and occasional evenings. But I’m always thinking about my stories, no matter what I’m doing.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

Finding the time, making the time, and occasionally organizing my thoughts.

What is your favorite thing about writing?

I like the creativity, how you can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything in a story. Whatever you want, you can make it happen.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

All over, but almost all of them start with a question; What if… you can fill in the blank. For my book, Shadows of Night it started with: What if a man was trapped and injured in a small space. What would happen to his state of mind? Would he go crazy? The Blue Effect started with: What if a guy thought he had superpowers and everyone thought he was crazy, but in the end, they found out he really did?

Who is your author inspiration?

One of my biggest inspirations is also one of my best friends, author Jennifer Malone Wright. She’s one of the hardest working gals I know, and even though she doesn’t realize it, she pushes me to try to keep up with her. Not that I can, but I try!

What is your favorite book of all time?

Very, very hard question to answer, as I love many books for many reasons. If I had to pick just one book though, I’d probably pick The Stand by Stephen King. It’s an epic novel, with a plethora of characters and a graphic novel sensibility that I find strongly appealing.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing, but as far as a career, who knows what the future holds! My plan is to continue to write and put my books out there for readers. It’s more than a hobby, it’s part of who I am. If that brings about financial success as an author, I’d be thrilled, but I’m just as thrilled to write the stories and hear from the readers who like them, no matter the size of my audience. I do hope I’ll have at least the second story arc in my Renegade Heroes series finished in the next five years, and be working on the third. I have so much fun writing them!

A list of works~

MEET THE AUTHOR

Rose Shababy and her family reside in eastern Washington State. Rose grew up in the Northwest but swears she’s going to move to warmer climates someday. She’s claimed this for over 20 years, however, and has yet to move more than 75 miles away from her mother.
Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider.
Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and only one still lives at home.
Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending cozy weekend days watching Syfy movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her husband.
If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with coke-bottle glasses.

EXCERPT

Alessandra

My heels click too loudly on the cement sidewalk. I’m moving fast. My fist tightens around the strap on my bag, and I pick up my already hurried pace. I shoot a quick look behind me. No one is there, but I know they are, watching me. My shoulders tighten like someone threw an ice cube down the back of my shirt. The Saturday night special in my purse should comfort me but it doesn’t; I can’t fire at shadows. I’m too nervous to even pull out my phone.

I know better than to be out on the streets at night even in a town where my dad is a Capo. I have never been afraid. I really haven’t had a reason to be. Best friends with the mob boss’s son, Antonio, my father a bad-ass enforcer for the Delisi family make it a no-brainer. Stay the fuck away from me.

Street and porch lights on symmetrical houses flit by, illuminating the cracked pavement then casting it into darkness. I’m two houses away and the pavement stretches before me like miles of empty wilderness. My breathing is labored. Echoing in my ears are abrupt huffs of air in tandem with rushing blood.

My house!

I run up the stairs and unlock the front door, throwing myself into the living room. I slam it behind me and click the lock. I turn, leaning up against it, exhausted. I kick off my shoes and slide down to the floor.

Why is this happening to me? This is destroying me. A tear pricks the corner of my eye. It is shredding me to pieces one eerie bit at a time. I realize paranoia is consuming me as I pull my legs up tight to my chest. I wrap my arms around them and bury my head. I have to tell someone. I will look weak, but I have to. I can’t take this anymore.
