EXCERPT

Prologue

Paige My eyelids were weak and heavy. All I did now was sleep, but I was still too tired to wake up. I didn’t even remember how I got here. It took a pathetic amount of strength to lift my head and glance over the tray of food. I wasn’t sure what time it was, but pretty sure it was late. Why they thought I wanted crackers now was beyond me. They can’t really expect me to eat, can they? Swallowing anything was torturous thanks to the deep open sores that trailed down my throat. Water burned, so the thought of eating anything was as appealing as chowing down on sandpaper—and would probably feel the same going down. I curled into the fetal position as I shivered and rubbed at my skin to get warm and felt the pointy bone through the flesh of my arms. I reached for the covers and winced at the pain fingers as I gathered up the scratchy fabric and pulled it over my aching shoulders. It hurt to move. It hurt to breathe. Most of all, it hurt to think. The life I wanted, with the man I wanted, haunted my dreams. You own me. Can’t you see that? You’re mine. You’re everything. I…can’t see my future with anyone else but you. I finally found what I’d been looking for my entire life, but I couldn’t keep it. The sound of voices yelling outside my hospital room snatched me out of my thoughts. I pushed myself up, panting at the exertion it took to sit upright. I leaned back on my elbows and my weak heart leaped in my chest when I recognized the voice causing all the commotion outside—the voice I’d know anywhere. “I need to see her, please.” Evan? No, no, no. I didn’t want him to see me like this. How did he find out I was here? “I’m sorry, sir. Immediate family only. This is the ICU.” “I’m not leaving. Paige? Daisy, it’s me!” My heavy head dropped to my hands. The sobs that ran through me made it difficult to breathe thanks to the oxygen tubes filtering through my nose. Pushing him away was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but I did it for him. I didn’t want to let him go. I wanted him to hold me, tell me he loved me and know he would never leave me. I wanted that so fucking much it ached. “Sir, please. She’s a very sick girl.” In time, he’d see. He deserved someone who could give him a life, children, and a future. All things I can’t offer him, no matter how much I wished things were different. He deserved better than this, better than me. The door was half closed but opened with such force that it banged into the wall and made me jump. Evan marched up to my bed and took my face in his hands. His hay colored eyes filled with tears as his hands shook. “I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.” His voice quivered with emotion, but I wasn’t sure if it was sadness, rage, or a combination of the two. “Now, you’re going to tell me exactly what’s going on. And why you lied to me—”

EXCERPT

Dana stared at the letter in her hand, all the blood rushing from her face. Her fingers began to tremble and the paper nearly slipped from her grip.

She sank down in the chair.

“Hey, what’s up?” her roommate Elli asked, as she walked past and slumped on the couch across from her. “You’re white as a ghost.”

“I . . . uh . . .” Dana glanced up at the slim, tall blonde who shared the small, two-bedroom apartment with her. It was a bit dumpy, but it was only a ten-minute walk from the university. “It’s from my mom.”

“Oh? What does the bitch have to say?”

Dana cringed a bit at the way Elli referred to her mom, feeling disloyal to her family for not sticking up for her, but at this precise moment, she didn’t really feel like defending her mother. And Elli was only going on the incidents she’d witnessed.

“She . . . ” Dana sucked in a deep breath. “She says I’m cut off.”

“Cut off? You mean, she won’t be giving you the money you need for you Masters?”

Dana shook her head. “She thinks it’s a waste of money and time. She thinks I should go out and get a real job, and learn to stand on my own two feet. She won’t even co-sign on another student loan.”

Dana gazed at Elli, her chest compressed under the weight of her crushed dreams. “I don’t know what to do,” she murmured helplessly.

Elli pursed her lips. “I think I have an idea, but promise me you’ll keep an open mind, because it’s a little bit crazy.”

EXCERPT

My eyes sprang open, and blue flames shot from my hands into the sky. Air rushed in and out of my lungs like a whirlwind. The trees blew sideways as I exhaled.

Lightning flashed overhead. The ground rumbled at my feet. Earth essences flooded through me, mixing with the wind and fire. Energy shattered across the treetops and raced over every leaf and branch like lightning bolts.

“Keep control of the energy!” Azrael shouted above the sound of the electric wind.

I had the power of fire, wind, earth, water, life, spirit, and even death racing through me. It was like trying to wield seven long whips that sparked when they clashed together. I had to unite them and gain control. I wrangled the seven elemental streams of energy together. The elements blew out of my hands in white waves. The leaves on the trees erupted in a celestial firestorm. Starfire illuminated my skin and ran through my body like the blood in my veins.

Chaos surrounded me, then everything went still and silent as if time itself stopped.

Gentle ethereal light curved and swirled around my body like a slow whirlpool. A gown of shimmering pearl silk cloaked the contours of my body. The heavenly cloth sparkled at my slightest movement. Pink, blue, green, and gold aurora waves added to the creation pallet floating around me. I touched the energy orb surrounding me like a cocoon. It rippled in soft waves and let out a gentle soprano melody.

“The energy is moving too fast,” Korban shouted. I could hear his words, but it was as if he was in a dream far away.

“She’s consuming all the energy of Earth.” Orion’s urgent voice grew faint. “She’s becoming a weapon, Azrael. You have to stop her, or she will never be able to touch another mortal again.”

The sound of ocean mist brushed past my ear like a whisper. Perfect round drops of water stood suspended in the air, reflecting the light of many stars and worlds. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Nothing on Earth could compare with the divine celestial colors and lights. I reached out and touched a droplet. A delicate indigo and gold flower blossomed from the tiny element. The creation process became so clear. I immediately understood how to form life with a single touch.

I reached out and touched another sphere of water. The inhabitants of an unknown culture, several galaxies away, flashed through my mind. In a split second, I saw every life form on the planet and felt I knew each one individually.

Azrael sounded closer when he said, “Her energy ‘tis too great. I can’t reach her.”

“You can, Azrael, and you must,” Orion shouted. “Korban is dying.”

I pulled my hand back. What had I done? I didn’t know how to step out of the creation cocoon spiraling around me. “Azrael?” I whispered. My body tensed and the light whipped violently. I took in deep breaths, searching for Azrael in the tempest of energy.

A hand shot through the waves of heat and grasped mine. Azrael stepped into the cocoon. His silver eyes reflected down on me like twin mirrors. He held my glowing hand to his lips, kissing each fingertip.

I was shocked at how different, but beautiful, my hand looked pressed to his lips. Shimmering iridescent light wrapped around our bodies.

“‘Tis your true form. What you look like without your human body,” Azrael answered.

“Did I destroy my human body?” I asked.

Azrael shook his head. “No, but you need to come back now or you will not be able to stay here on Earth. We need you, and the longer you are in this form, the more your mortal body dies.”

INTERVIEW QUESTION

What was the hardest part of writing your book, and how did you overcome it?

Hardest part? I think starting from scratch and learning the process of actually writing a book. I’m strong at dialogue, so that part wasn’t a problem, but I lacked in novel structure and how to construct a novel. I had to learn from the ground up, so I went to night classes, joined writing workshops, read books on writing to hone my skills enough to get the first draft done. And then when the book was complete, I had to learn how to edit, revise, and redo. This part of writing a novel is an ongoing work in progress! LOL!

What is your favorite late night snack?

I’m gonna say a bag of party mix—the cheesier the better! I do love my salty snacks! And thankfully, I don’t indulge that often. Cheers!

AUTHOR TOP 10

1. Enjoying my morning coffee outside (weather permitting) on our patio. True therapy.

2. Big. Bang. Theory. Sheldon still cracks me up!

3. The original Star Wars movie. I know, I’m dating myself, but I was one of those people who went to the movie theatre to see it again and again. Of course movies were cheaper back then!

4. My reading chair. It’s comfy and cozy. Even when I have to share it with the cat.

5. Reading...in my reading chair…with or without the cat.

6. Writing the first draft of a novel that nobody sees because that’s where the fun begins!

7. My pets. After all, I have to read my first draft to someone. Right?

8. Writing ‘THE END’ on the final draft of my novel. Trust me, it’s a BIG deal!

9. Connecting with my readers online and offline. Trust me, it’s a HUGE deal!

10. Single. Malt. Scotch. No explanation necessary.

Tread
by Brandace and Justin Morrow
Genre: Contemporary Military Romance

Goodreads Button with Shadow

SYNOPSIS

GRACE

For me, growing up did not imply independence. My whole life has been paved before me like a well-traveled road. My twenty-first birthday signaled the end of my father’s rule, and the beginning of my husband’s—where I am expected to churn out infinite children with a smile.

As I stare at the oversized Temple doors, weighed down by more than yards of heavy, white lace, I do what I have never done before.

I make a decision for myself.

I decide to run.

TREAD

Being in a motorcycle club is in my DNA, as is the military requirement to join. I served, I fought, and I survived the crucible of grueling training and intense combat. I returned to my club with newfound respect for right, wrong, and the shades of gray that connect them.

By day, I work at Ronin Auto, pulling things apart, fixing the problem, and putting them back together.

Grace and her nonfunctioning, little sedan prove to be a hiccup in a well-oiled machine.

Because by night, I smuggle soft felons into Mexico.

With things heating up at the border, and a missing MC family member, the last thing I need is an innocent to worry about.

But something about Grace makes me want to take apart all of her pieces to figure out how someone so beautiful has never even been kissed.

Against my better judgment, I strike a bargain with the little, blue-eyed beauty, and it changes everything I thought I knew. About women. About the club. About the man I’ve become.

EXCERPT

ronin
[roh-nin]
noun, plural ronin, ronins. Japanese History
1.   A samurai who no longer serves a daimyo, or feudal lord; a master-less Samurai.

My name is Tread, and I'm the lead mechanic for Ronin Auto. I'm also either one of the baddest motherfuckers you'll ever meet, or the answer to your prayers. Just depends on which way your compass is pointing. Literally.

Most motorcycle clubs give you a handle when you prospect. My MC is different. We were given our handles at birth.

Our fathers founded the club after coming home from Panama, having participated in Operation Just Cause, to one members inherited land on New Mexico's southern border.

After seeing what the cartels were capable of in Central America, the founding members saw the opportunity to help our country while helping themselves. They sent the mules back, but kept the drugs as their prize in a sometimes lethal game of hide and seek. They charged a king's ransom to get wanted felons safely out of the country. By the time these men started having children, there was a legacy and a duty driving them to plan ahead.

Once the next generation was old enough to enlist we were on a bus out of town. Defended our nation's freedom with pride. We went Airborne, Air Assault, and Special Forces, earning the pins and tabs that we would wear for the rest of our lives.

When our enlistments were up, we came back to our sleepy town with knowledge, honor, and righteous indignation. Arizona and Texas had walls, surveillance, and patrols, while the vast majority of New Mexico went unguarded still.

While we risked our lives and lost brothers to protect our people, illegals were walking onto U.S. soil with guns and drugs seemingly with the United States’ blessing. One hundred and eighty miles. Seven government run surveillance towers.

Ronin has controlled the border for over twenty years.

The second generation was born to this fight.

We became a dynasty.

PLAYLIST

MEET THE AUTHORS

Brandace and Justin Morrow have been through 10 years of the Army life, including three deployments and four children. They met in seventh grade, where they had scandalous hand-holding rendezvous in the gym before school. The courtship was brief however, only lasting a week, given his aversion to the telephone. Five years later he proposed to her on the steps of that middle school weeks before it would be demolished. Through the years, there have been laughter and tears, more time apart than together. Writing is an escape for them in an all too real world. Justin still hates the telephone.

Day 9 of 12 Days of Back to School Books with Jennifer Redmile

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jennifer Redmile grew up on the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney NSW, and now lives in Geraldton WA with her husband and two gorgeous puppy dogs. She has always been an avid fantasy fiction reader, and always worked with children, so when she decided to write a novel, it was a natural progression to combine the two and make it a children’s novel.

SYNOPSIS

The Children of When follows the adventures of three children raised in separate “foster-homes” who are magically transported to another world on their fourteenth birthday. On arrival in this new world, they discover they are part of a 1000 year old prophecy. In order to fulfill the prophecy and survive, they must find and reunite three missing pieces of an ancient amulet and learn to control and use their unique Gifts, all while being pursued by those who would prefer the amulet remain missing.

2. My kids: Carly is 25 and Brendan is 23…and they have both turned into adults I’m very proud of.

3. My dogs Ashie and Molly.

4. Writing

5. Sleeping

6. No longer working, which means I get more time to write.

7. A cup of tea I didn’t have to make myself

8. A meal I didn’t have to make myself

9. Sleeping (okay, so it’s important enough to be mentioned twice).

10. My amazing writing buddy, Alison Clifford, without whose constant praise and inspiration I’d have given up long ago.

AN INTERVIEW QUESTION

How did you come to write this particular book or series?

I had just finished a 10 week contract as a boarding supervisor at a Residential College for teenage kids. After the first week of being home full-time, my hubby suggested I not go back to work and live on one wage for a while. I heard about this writing challenge called NaNoWriMo, where you have to write 50,000 words in a month. As it was October, and the challenge runs throughout the month of November, I started thinking about writing a book. I’ve always been a huge reader of fantasy novels, and I’ve always worked with kids. So I decided to write a fantasy novel about kids for kids. I’m not really sure where the original idea came from, but the story has evolved from what the characters tell me to do next.
