Forever Marked
 BY Lady J

SYNOPSIS

If you were a marked woman, how far would you run?

At only 23 years old, Ellora's life is turned upside down. She captures the unwanted attention of a dangerously ruthless man, who'll stop at nothing until he possesses her. Haunted by nightmares of the brutal attack she survived, Ellora flees the country desperate to hide. But, the longer she runs the deeper his obsession grows.

Behr is a hard working bachelor who's life is stuck on repeat. Every single day is filled with the same people, and the same routine. That is, until a beautiful stranger stumbles into the local pub and into his heart. Even though he's immediately drawn to her raven black hair and deep green eyes... he knows she's hiding a secret. One he's determined to uncover.

Can Ellora stay safe in this small harbor town?

Or

Has the twisted game of cat and mouse, just begun?

EXCERPT

Ellora raced down the hallway as fast as her legs could carry her. Dread gripped her when she
heard his heavy footsteps pounding on the hardwood floors behind her. His powerful presence echoed around the eerily empty house. It didn't matter how fast she ran, he was always right on her heels. Ellora quaked violently when she made it to the stairs. If she couldn't make it out of there, she'd never survive. Reaching out, Ellora gripped the railing with both hands and used the leverage to fly down the steps. She skipped so many at a time, it felt like flying. He thundered down the steps, after her. The smell of his rancid panting, snaked its way over her shoulder. The stench stung her nose. Ellora risked looking back. His large black eyes, vicious with a murderous rage she didn’t understand, were only a few feet behind her. He was close enough to grab her. Oh. My God, this is it. He reached out... and she lunged, taking a giant leap before she got to the last three steps. She successfully made it over the carpeted runner at the bottom. Her ankles stung as she landed hard, on her bare feet. Easily ignoring the pain, Ellora sprinted to the front door. She heard him land on the runner and crashed to the floor, as it slipped out from under him. Shaking, she fumbled with clumsy fingers, trying to unlock the deadbolt and door knob lock.

After several slips from her bloodied hands, she finally heaved open the door. She skidded on her own blood, which was trickling down her legs and pooling onto the floor. The cool air rushed in, sobering her. Chills raised goosebumps on her skin as she dashed out the door. Ellora looked back to make sure he wasn’t behind her. This action caused her to lose her balance, tripping down the driveway and crashing right into the car. She remembered leaving her it unlocked, so she wrenched it open and jumped inside. She immediately locked the doors in record speed. It took only a moment for her to get a grip on her debilitating panic. She frantically searched her pockets for the car keys. First the front, then the back. Ellora froze. A devastating hopelessness made her stomach drop when she realized that she left the keys in the house. She hung her head in defeat… BANG! BANG! BANG! The sudden violent pounding sent Ellora shooting out of her seat, frightened to death as he pulverized the glass window with his fists. He stopped his onslaught abruptly and pressed his face against the window. His disturbing eyes and malicious sneer held her captive. He lifted his hand presenting a set of keys and shook them. ‘NO!’

MEET THE AUTHOR

I grew up in Upstate NY, but my heart belongs in Arizona. If given the chance, I'd gladly trade in frost burn, for sun burn!  I speak in movie quotes ALL the time. Seriously, it might be considered a sickness by now ;) I absolutely love the sound of others laughing. So I'll try to get you to do just that!

I love coffee, peanut butter cups, and OF COURSE reading.  I grew up causing all kinds of trouble with my twin sister/partner in crime.  My wild over-exaggerated story telling grew, along with my love for reading. With the support of my hubby and the encouragement of my womb mate, I put pen to paper, and let my imagination take over.

I am an author currently working on the release of my debut novel. Forever Marked is a romantic suspense, and the first book in a series. I enjoy reading all genres. Paranormal, thriller, romantic suspense, dystopian.... You name it!

EXCERPT

Prologue

Paige My eyelids were weak and heavy. All I did now was sleep, but I was still too tired to wake up. I didn’t even remember how I got here. It took a pathetic amount of strength to lift my head and glance over the tray of food. I wasn’t sure what time it was, but pretty sure it was late. Why they thought I wanted crackers now was beyond me. They can’t really expect me to eat, can they? Swallowing anything was torturous thanks to the deep open sores that trailed down my throat. Water burned, so the thought of eating anything was as appealing as chowing down on sandpaper—and would probably feel the same going down. I curled into the fetal position as I shivered and rubbed at my skin to get warm and felt the pointy bone through the flesh of my arms. I reached for the covers and winced at the pain fingers as I gathered up the scratchy fabric and pulled it over my aching shoulders. It hurt to move. It hurt to breathe. Most of all, it hurt to think. The life I wanted, with the man I wanted, haunted my dreams. You own me. Can’t you see that? You’re mine. You’re everything. I…can’t see my future with anyone else but you. I finally found what I’d been looking for my entire life, but I couldn’t keep it. The sound of voices yelling outside my hospital room snatched me out of my thoughts. I pushed myself up, panting at the exertion it took to sit upright. I leaned back on my elbows and my weak heart leaped in my chest when I recognized the voice causing all the commotion outside—the voice I’d know anywhere. “I need to see her, please.” Evan? No, no, no. I didn’t want him to see me like this. How did he find out I was here? “I’m sorry, sir. Immediate family only. This is the ICU.” “I’m not leaving. Paige? Daisy, it’s me!” My heavy head dropped to my hands. The sobs that ran through me made it difficult to breathe thanks to the oxygen tubes filtering through my nose. Pushing him away was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but I did it for him. I didn’t want to let him go. I wanted him to hold me, tell me he loved me and know he would never leave me. I wanted that so fucking much it ached. “Sir, please. She’s a very sick girl.” In time, he’d see. He deserved someone who could give him a life, children, and a future. All things I can’t offer him, no matter how much I wished things were different. He deserved better than this, better than me. The door was half closed but opened with such force that it banged into the wall and made me jump. Evan marched up to my bed and took my face in his hands. His hay colored eyes filled with tears as his hands shook. “I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.” His voice quivered with emotion, but I wasn’t sure if it was sadness, rage, or a combination of the two. “Now, you’re going to tell me exactly what’s going on. And why you lied to me—”

Genre: Contemporary Military Romance

Goodreads Button with Shadow

SYNOPSIS

GRACE

For me, growing up did not imply independence. My whole life has been paved before me like a well-traveled road. My twenty-first birthday signaled the end of my father’s rule, and the beginning of my husband’s—where I am expected to churn out infinite children with a smile.

As I stare at the oversized Temple doors, weighed down by more than yards of heavy, white lace, I do what I have never done before.

I make a decision for myself.

I decide to run.

TREAD

Being in a motorcycle club is in my DNA, as is the military requirement to join. I served, I fought, and I survived the crucible of grueling training and intense combat. I returned to my club with newfound respect for right, wrong, and the shades of gray that connect them.

By day, I work at Ronin Auto, pulling things apart, fixing the problem, and putting them back together.

Grace and her nonfunctioning, little sedan prove to be a hiccup in a well-oiled machine.

Because by night, I smuggle soft felons into Mexico.

With things heating up at the border, and a missing MC family member, the last thing I need is an innocent to worry about.

But something about Grace makes me want to take apart all of her pieces to figure out how someone so beautiful has never even been kissed.

Against my better judgment, I strike a bargain with the little, blue-eyed beauty, and it changes everything I thought I knew. About women. About the club. About the man I’ve become.

EXCERPT

ronin
[roh-nin]
noun, plural ronin, ronins. Japanese History
1.   A samurai who no longer serves a daimyo, or feudal lord; a master-less Samurai.

My name is Tread, and I'm the lead mechanic for Ronin Auto. I'm also either one of the baddest motherfuckers you'll ever meet, or the answer to your prayers. Just depends on which way your compass is pointing. Literally.

Most motorcycle clubs give you a handle when you prospect. My MC is different. We were given our handles at birth.

Our fathers founded the club after coming home from Panama, having participated in Operation Just Cause, to one members inherited land on New Mexico's southern border.

After seeing what the cartels were capable of in Central America, the founding members saw the opportunity to help our country while helping themselves. They sent the mules back, but kept the drugs as their prize in a sometimes lethal game of hide and seek. They charged a king's ransom to get wanted felons safely out of the country. By the time these men started having children, there was a legacy and a duty driving them to plan ahead.

Once the next generation was old enough to enlist we were on a bus out of town. Defended our nation's freedom with pride. We went Airborne, Air Assault, and Special Forces, earning the pins and tabs that we would wear for the rest of our lives.

When our enlistments were up, we came back to our sleepy town with knowledge, honor, and righteous indignation. Arizona and Texas had walls, surveillance, and patrols, while the vast majority of New Mexico went unguarded still.

While we risked our lives and lost brothers to protect our people, illegals were walking onto U.S. soil with guns and drugs seemingly with the United States’ blessing. One hundred and eighty miles. Seven government run surveillance towers.

Ronin has controlled the border for over twenty years.

The second generation was born to this fight.

We became a dynasty.

PROLOGUE

I’m cold and drenched, but I’m not moving anywhere. The rain continues to flood down, making it hard to see through the window I’m standing in front of. A drop of water lands my eye and I blink it away in annoyance only to be hit with another droplet. No matter what, I refuse to tear my gaze away from the two figures I can see inside. It’s Ryuu and his young daughter. He’s reading her a story from a book, by the fireplace. She’s sitting on his lap, dressed in a white, frilly nightgown, smiling as she points at the pages.

My mind travels back to the years I was a small child, after Ryuu supposedly found me beaten and almost unconscious on his doorstep. He never read me stories. Not like this. He never sat me down and laughed as I pulled faces. Never brushed or played with my hair and tied it into a loose braid. No. I lived out most of my childhood in a dark room with nothing but fighting equipment. I trained day and night, six days a week, while he watched and would hit me with a thin stick every time I messed up. On the seventh day, I was allowed to rest, but would have to spend the day with my head buried inside books, after all, education was still important.

I was never his daughter, I can see that now, I was taken for one purpose, to be his ultimate weapon. He knew the moment he slaughtered my family what he wanted of me, and I fell into his sticky trap. Well, not anymore.

A movement to my left distracts me and I immediately glance in the direction. It’s one of Ryuu’s guard’s, who is not quite dead.

I’d snuck through a secret entrance, only key members of the family knew about. I was one of them. The place was heavily guarded, as I anticipated, but no one quite expected me to appear through the underground passageway. I killed all of the men, well almost.

With a tiny groan, I make my way over to the barely alive man. I drag him up by the shoulders and take hold of either side of his head. With a quick, firm flick, I snap his neck. The sound of his bone snapping brings a smile to my face.

Dropping his lifeless body, I return to the window. Ryuu and his daughter are getting to their feet. He kisses her on the forehead and I watch as she skips credulously out of the room.

I reach behind me and wrap my fingers tightly around the handle of my large dagger.

It’s time to hunt.

SYNOPSIS

Emily Kate Boudreaux runs a restaurant located on a bayou in Texas, because it’s what her family expects of her. She’d rather pursue her living as an artist. Then sexy chef Connor Rikeland walks into her life and turns it upside down. Soon, Emily Kate’s restaurant is a roaring success, she has time to paint to her heart’s content, there’s a hunky guy warming her bed, and she’s having visions of happily ever after.

Connor Rikeland is used to women throwing themselves at him, and he’s been known to use relationships as a bargaining chip in his climb up the ladder. He wants a culinary career in the spotlight—and Cajun cooking isn’t his ticket to fame even if Emily Kate is unlike anyone he’s ever met.

Not to mention Connor has a few secrets that have put him on the wrong side of her brother’s FBI case. When the pieces of just why Connor is hanging out in a backwoods town begin to surface, Emily Kate must decide what’s real, what’s a lie, and what’s worth risking her heart over. Because deception or not, life with Connor is delicious.

EXCERPT

The restaurant had a strange vibe.
Just as Connor reached for the door, an older couple stormed out, complaining about jambalaya. Was the chef’s jambalaya not up to par tonight? That seemed like a dish a place called Louisiana Kitchen would have perfected.
The building was an old wooden structure with a covered porch wrapping around three sides. Ceiling fans lazily spun every few feet. They didn’t do much to ease the muggy, early summer air, but their real purpose was to keep mosquitoes at bay. The small lobby contained a hostess stand positioned to discourage patrons from seating themselves. Wooden benches lined the walls for waiting customers. Eclectic paintings and sculptures hung on the walls, all portraying some sort of Louisiana-esque theme. He studied an especially whimsical design of two crawfish that appeared to be holding hands—er—claws, until another unhappy couple who appeared to be in their forties walked into the lobby, chased by a frazzled woman with flour smudges on her face and curly blond hair attempting to escape the bun on the back of her head.
She had smooth, lightly tanned skin and looked as if she wore very little makeup. She was taller than average for a female, maybe five seven or eight, and most of that appeared to be legs. He had always had a thing for great legs.
Despite the smudges on her face, the snappy red and white sundress she wore was unsullied. Having worked in restaurants for most of his life, Connor immediately pegged her as some sort of manager. She’d probably been in the kitchen, sampling the chef’s dishes. Did the chef deliberately let her leave the kitchen looking like that, or was he so busy, he hadn’t noticed? Connor himself had experienced plenty of both types of days.
Except this restaurant didn’t look particularly busy. He could see into the dining room from his vantage point, and no more than half the picnic tables and booths were occupied.
In Detroit, Thursday evenings were often nearly as busy as Fridays. Yet another difference between this place and his home.
“Please, Mr. and Mrs. Henry, don’t be upset. I know you were looking forward to the pecan-encrusted trout. I promise, next time you come in, I’ll have a new chef. That will be one of the interview questions,” the blond pleaded with the unhappy customers as they paused in the lobby so Mrs. Henry could dig her keys out of her purse.
Pecan-encrusted trout? New chef?
Connor could do pecan-encrusted trout, assuming the kitchen had the ingredients on hand, of course. His interest was officially piqued. Not only in the hot blond, but in the situation that was becoming clearer. His mind spun a million miles a second: here was a way to hide out for a while, until it was safe for him to go back to Detroit and figure out
what the hell to do with the rest of his life.
It was crazy, but he had done crazier. It was risky ... Wait, no it wasn’t. This cozy, backwoods restaurant was not the sort of place his pursuers would ever dream of visiting.
His family had no clue what he was doing. Hell, he hadn’t even told them he was applying for the chef’s position at the casino. He hadn’t wanted to face their disappointment if he didn’t get it. As little as his family offered their praise, they were far too effervescent with their sympathy when things did not work out to his advantage.
It was perfect. It was ... “Uh, excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Henry.”
The blond and her unhappy customers all turned their heads to look in his direction.
He offered his most charming half smile. The one most women found irresistible. Mrs. Henry’s eyes glazed, but the blond narrowed hers as suspicion bloomed on her face. Of course, when he was charming women, they were not normally under duress at the time.
“I’m sorry I’m late, uh ...”
“Emily Kate, is this your new chef?” Mrs. Henry gave him a hopeful look.
Emily Kate. While he’d only been in the South a few days, he had already decided he would never understand the locals’ insistence on using first and middle names.
“No, I ...” Connor cut her off.
“And, yes, pecan-encrusted trout happens to be my specialty.”
“It ... is?” She looked utterly confused. Connor bit the inside of his cheek to keep from chuckling. Sometimes, it was almost too damn easy. Another reason he couldn’t quite understand why his former boss up in Detroit had never promoted him. Everybody else loved him, almost instantly.
“Remember, I mentioned it when we spoke on the phone? I also told you I might be a little late today, considering I had to drive up from New Orleans,” he lied through his teeth. It was worth the small fib, though. The Henrys were hooked. Emily Kate was still dubious, but she was about to not have a choice. Connor knew how to play this game.
“You’re from New Orleans?” Mrs. Henry asked, her voice breathy. Mr. Henry didn’t even notice his wife was all but drooling. He was clearly too busy envisioning the pecan-encrusted trout that was now in his immediate future.
“Studied there,” Connor hedged. He didn’t want to get too caught up in his own lies. He didn’t know jack shit about New Orleans, and if these people started asking questions, he’d be screwed before he even got started.
“How about you all take your seats, and the server’ll get you a drink while Emily Kate and I head back to the kitchen and I get started on your order. Is that two pecan-encrusted trouts?”
“Crab stuffed shrimp for me,” Mrs. Henry piped up. “With tezcuco seafood salad.”
Tuscan what? “Uh, right. Come on, Emily Kate.”
The Henrys happily headed toward the hovering hostess, while Emily Kate remained where she was, glaring at him.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he chided. “I just saved your ass.”

EXCERPT

“What happens the next time my life goes to shit?” My voice was shaking, but I willed myself not to cry. Not this time. “What happens when you decide that you are done with my drama and with me? You’ll have given up your family for some crazy girl who became a huge regret?”

Grant leaned forward, so we were nose-to-nose. “I don’t know what that asshole did to you, but I hate that you talk about yourself like that because it isn’t true. You are worth so much more than he led you to believe. You are not some crazy girl, and if you think I can just give up on you, on us, you’ve got another thing coming. I have enough fight for the both of us, and I can only hope that you get on board because I don’t plan on spending another night without you. The last two were hell, and I will not go through that again. For the first time in my life, I was terrified. I felt what you feel when you worry. That terror, it was unbearable.”

I leaned into him and pressed my lips to his. My arms went around his neck into his messy brown hair. He pulled me into his lap. “You promised you would stop running. You have to start letting me in without making me chase you.”

I burrowed my face into his neck. “I know, but I’m terrified of letting you handle everything and losing myself again in the process. I just put some of the pieces back together, and I can’t afford for them to fall apart again.”

“I know.” He whispered in my ear with his face buried in my neck. “We will fix all of this together. You don’t have to do any of this on your own. I fell in love with the feisty beauty who thought I was going to murder her when I tried to ask her out. I’ve been chasing you this whole time. Slow down and let me catch you, Eve. I will. I promise.”

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

Praise from previous reviews:

“With Eve's fire and Grant's cocky determination, this was a fast, fun, believable read. I don't generally go for the alpha males even if saying so does place me in a significant minority, but, in this book, Grant was perfect. I wouldn't mind meeting or dating an alpha male like him any day!”

-Written by Amelia for Summer’s Book Blog.

“This story made remember why I love to read romance!”

-Jennifer Jura, Reader

“I just spent all day reading this book for the second time. I loved it even more the second time around. The characters are well developed and pull you right in. Eve and Grant's story sizzles and I can't wait for the next book in the series!”
