Burning Doors by Renee N. Meland

BURNING DOORS
The Extraction List Series Book 2
by Renee N. Meland

SYNOPSIS

Cain Foley committed his first murder before he could even drive a car…

Not that he would’ve had anywhere to drive to.
 When he was fifteen,
America was one of the poorest countries in the world,
and its’ citizens took their hatred of that fact
out on each other through gangs and violence.

Children barely tall enough for carnival rides
peppered the streets selling drugs (or themselves)
so they could buy their next meal.

Every night on the news,
Cain watched as an angelic blonde woman
who lost her own child swore she’d end it…

She assaulted America’s televisions
with praise for the Parental Morality Law:
a set of rules that spells out exactly what it takes
to be a parent in the eyes of the government,
and the consequences of breaking those rules.
He prayed every night that she’d come to rescue him
before his father took off his belt again.

Before she could save him, Cain faced a fatal choice…
Fight back or die on the basement floor.

He chose life.

Now on the run,
he finds himself being hunted by a police officer
with his own special brand of torture.
Before he can save even a handful of the children
who have been swept up in the gang life,
he must first cover up not one,
but two murders.
His father’s and one committed by a teenage madam
who is either the love of his life, or his final undoing.

As he feels himself being pushed further
 and further to the edge,
Cain realizes that surviving his father
 was just the beginning.

EXCERPT

The first time I killed someone, it was an accident. Though I guess it was the kind of accident that happens when you squeeze your hands around someone’s neck for too long, or when you shove someone who is standing too close to the edge of a building. In my case, I accidentally killed my father when I beat him to death with a pipe.

He had set me up that night, I’m sure of it. I was always careful to leave the TV volume down so I wouldn’t be caught. But when I flipped the power on that night, the news roared. The woman I wanted to see was there, giving a speech like always, but her voice came out with the force of thunder. Sweat drenched my body when I heard the door to my parents’ upstairs bedroom fly open and hit the wall. The foundation shook and so did my limbs. I sat frozen in a seated position as I heard his footsteps. All I could focus on were his shiny patent leather shoes coming toward me. Even in the middle of the night, he took the time to slip them on.

I could smell him before I even saw his feet. He constantly stunk of mouthwash and old cologne; it was some putrid mix of sandalwood and beach vacations that we would never take. He cackled as he stepped toward me, so the minty air from his breath reached me before his hand did. I felt my head hit the floor before I felt the familiar sting in my cheek.

“You’re so stupid. You really think you’ll ever leave here? Where do you think you’re going to go, huh? You need me. She hasn’t come for you and she never will!” He kicked me in the side with his foot.

My stomach clenched from the impact.

I usually kept quiet when he hit me. At most, I would agree with whatever he was saying to stop him before he did real damage.

It never worked.

No matter what I said, or didn’t say, the blows would keep coming. My mother was always conveniently upstairs, but no one can tell me she couldn’t hear the snap of his belt or the furniture rattle as he shoved me into it.

That night was different. Maybe it was watching the woman from the television, or maybe it was the way his smile stretched across his face as he struck me, I don’t know. But when he was finished and heading back upstairs, I spat towards him.

My cheeks burned as I did it. In fact, my whole body felt like it was on fire. But I’d be lying if I said I wished I could take it back. Even when he turned, eyes wide when he noticed the wad of saliva glistening on the concrete floor, I didn’t regret it one bit.

I may have even cracked a smile.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?
I wanted to write because when I was little, my favorite thing to do was “play pretend,” which was basically making up stories. Now I get paid for it.

What genre(s) do you write in?
I don’t really pick genres. I just come up with ideas and wherever they fall, they fall. Burning Doors happens to be sci-fi.

What was the first book you ever wrote?
We used to write books in my first grade class. I think it was about a girl raised by dinosaurs.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?
I would have to say Burning Doors.

And what makes this your favorite?
Cain, the main character, is by far my favorite character I’ve ever created. I adore him.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?
I try to write for at least an hour a day, but it doesn’t always happen. But I tend to find a way to produce fairly quickly, so I guess it works out.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?
Getting through the scenes that need to be in the novel in order to develop certain things, but aren’t necessarily exciting.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
I get to create new worlds and people that area as real to me as anything else.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?
Anywhere and everywhere.

Who is your author inspiration and why?
Chuck Palahniuk. He has his own style that is nothing like anyone else’s, and he truly cares about inspiring would-be writers.

What is your favorite book of all time and why?
Unwind by Neal Shusterman. He is unbelievably gifted and I truly belief that book is sci-fi at its best.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?
Hopefully with a few more books under my belt and a steady following of readers.

Scott E. Tarbet
Scott E. Tarbet writes what fires his imagination: the broad umbrella of speculative fiction. He is especially intrigued by how human beings react to and interact with science, technology, and other magics.

TC Phillips
TC Phillips hails from tropical central Queensland in Australia, where he currently lives with his loving wife, three young children, a spoilt cat, and an overactive imagination. An avid reader from a young age, he has held a long-standing attraction for the written word and is excited to make his own contributions to the vibrant and ever shifting world of storytelling. Holding degrees in both Theatre Studies and Education, he is also currently completing his Master of Arts (writing) through Swinburne University of Technology.

She has found that writing maintains a sense of order in her life. Her first published story, “The Journey of Inspector Roux” appeared in Terra Mechanica: a Steampunk Anthology (2014), another Xchyler publication.

Other hobbies that she enjoys are playing volleyball, genealogical research, and indexing obituaries. She is a member of the American Night Writers Association (ANWA).

Danielle E. Shipley
Danielle E. Shipley's first novelettes told the everyday misadventures of wacky kids like herself. Or so she thought. Unbeknownst to them all, half of her characters were actually closeted elves, dwarves, fairies, or some combination thereof. When it all came to light, Danielle did the sensible thing: packed up and moved to Fantasy Land, where daily rent is the low, low price of her heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, firstborn child, sanity, and words; lots of them. Shipley has also been known to spend short bursts of time in the real-life Chicago area with the parents who home-schooled her and the two little sisters who keep her humble. When she's not living the highs and lows of writing, publishing, and all that authorial jazz, she's probably blogging about it at EverOnWord.wordpress.com.

This is her third appearance in a Xchyler anthology, following the paranormal "Two Spoons" in Legends and Lore, and "Reality As We Know It" in fantasy collection The Toll of Another Bell. Other publications include Inspired (a novel), and a series of fairy-tale retelling mash-ups, The Wilderhark Tales.

AUTHOR TOP 10

C. R. Simper
Favorite Things

- Quote "A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."
Attributed to John A Shedd. Salt from my Attic. 1928. It's a good reminder that
talents need to be shared in spite of fears.

- TV show  My current favorite TV show is "Forever" staring Ioan Gruffudd.

- Comic book character  If I say I don't read comic books, don't take it as an affront to the genre. I am a "word" person, not an "image" person, and comic books just
don't work for me. I did recently buy James Owen's Starchild, which seems to be a
unique mix of both.

- Movie  Sherlock Holmes and sequel with Robert Downey Jr.; Guardians of the
Galaxy. (Seriously, when else have you ever left the theater with a movie-crush on a
raccoon?)

- Book  My kid-heart would break if I didn't say "The Silver Chair, by C. S. Lewis".
Fortunately I read enough as a child/teen to make up for the fact that I can't really
get into books as an adult. The last book I rather enjoyed was John Grisham's
Playing for Pizza. Italy + Football + A little-bit-of-romance, what's not to love?

- Candy bar  Heath or Score.

- Junk food  Salsa Verde Doritos

- Place you visited San Ignacio, Belize.

- Restaurant  New Mexican Grill, Gilbert, AZ

- Island  Cay Caulker, Belize, as it is the only island I have ever visited that didn't
require me to cross a terrifying bridge to get there. (Thanks, Coronado Island. Yes, I
did prefer a 12-seater plane ride.)

SYNOPSIS

Book editor Hannah Levinson couldn’t be happier. This “Nice Jewish Girl” is ready to marry the man she’s longed after for half her life. When her fiancĂ© suggests they audition for Last Fling, a steamy new reality show for engaged couples, she lets herself be swayed. Maybe she’ll learn a thing or two.

Vlad Shustov’s fall from a once-bright career as a competitive figure skater was swift. Now trapped by a shameful past and an uncertain future, “Vlad the Bad” strips for cash. Joining the cast of Last Fling could earn him a fortune—or at least enough to finally leave stripping. But to win the show’s prize, he must seduce an engaged woman, something he can't even bear the thought of.

Hannah's not like any woman Vlad's met before. Betrayed by the man she thought she loved and relegated to the ugly-duckling role she’d worked so hard to shed, can she trust there’s more to Vlad than meets the eye? With sleazy TV tactics shattering the last shreds of the contestants' confidence, they'll have to believe true happiness is not only possible...it may be looking right at them.

EXCERPT

When Hannah arrived at The Smiling Shark just before midnight, Vlad was waiting on the love seat, his arm resting along the back; a glass of wine was on the table. For a long moment, their gazes locked and Hannah drank in the sight of him.

“Is this what I’m doing to thank you?” she asked.

“Nyet,” he said. “That, I’m still deciding. This is because seeing you only this afternoon with your boys was not enough. Not after how we left things last time.”

“I didn’t like how we left things either. Especially since you might go home after talent night.”

He lifted his hand, inviting her to sit beside him. She settled into the circle of his arm, the brush of his fingertips against her bare shoulder making her skin tingle. Across the room, the bartender smiled.

“Getting eliminated wouldn’t be the worst thing,” Vlad said softly. “Except for leaving you.”

“What about the money?”

“Maybe I’ve changed my mind about how important it is to win.”

Did that mean he had changed his mind about trying to start a new life? Though she was disappointed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. He hadn’t had a clear picture of what that new life might be, and it was hard to walk away from what one knew. Without an education, it would be hard for him to earn the sort of money he earned from stripping. She wouldn’t demean him by suggesting that he ought to “better” himself. Instead, she smiled and took his hand. “This show has changed my mind about a lot of things, too.”

“Jack?”

Her smile felt strained. “Once we’re back in New York, things between us will sort themselves out. Being here has made me see that so much of what I always believed wasn’t necessarily true. I mean, in twenty-four hours, I’ll be tap-dancing on live TV!”

“Feel ready for it?”

“I think so. You saw me rehearse. What do you think?”

“I think you move very well.”

“For a big girl, you mean.”

“Not at all. But you’re still not confident enough to look your audience in the eye.”

“Can you blame me?”

“You have no reason to doubt yourself, and showing confidence matters. In skating, the judges wanted to see we were not afraid to look right at them. It is even more important for me now. Ever seen a stripper afraid to make eye contact?”

“I’ve never seen a stripper at all.”

He blinked in surprise. “Really? Not even a fake cop dropping in on a bachelorette party?”

“My friends aren’t like that. We don’t get enjoyment out of degrading people.”

Vlad raised his brow. “Degrading them?”

She winced. “No, I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Sometimes, it does feel like I’m a piece of meat, and nothing else.” His voice was resigned.

“Vlad, I’m sorry.”

His touch reassured her that he didn’t take her comment personally. “No harm done. Still, the fact you have never seen an exotic dancer troubles me. I think we should remedy that right now.”

It took a moment to grasp his meaning. “You’re going to strip for me, here? Now?”

“If you’re only going to see one, might as well be the best.” He turned to the bartender. “Miguel, you don’t mind, right?”

The bartended laughed. “Oh, no, senor, I don’t mind at all.”

“First we need some music.” Vlad took her hand and led her across the room to the jukebox, where he perused the selections.

She was conscious of his strong hand still clasping hers. “What do you usually strip to? Disco?”

“Depends on the character I’m playing. I just did a routine to Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause,’ where I played a movie star. I’ve done construction workers, cops, the usual. You won’t get the full effect though, because I’m not wearing tear-off pants.”

This sounded intriguing. “There is such a thing? Where do you get them, Stripper Supply?”

He laughed. “It’s just normal pants cut up and held together with fasteners. Can’t be too tight though, or I’ll break out of them too early.”

Hannah shook her head. “The things you learn.”

“This song’s good.” He fed money into the slot and punched a number, then gestured at a nearby chair. “You sit here. And take out some money. I don’t do this for free, you know.”

His teasing wink made her laugh. “I didn’t bring any.”

He grabbed a cocktail napkin and folded it in half. “We’ll pretend.”

She took the napkin and settled back, imagining she was a customer at the club where he danced. As she sipped her wine, he braced his hands on the arms of the chair and whispered in her ear. “A private dance, just for you.”

A rush of heat spread through Hannah’s cheeks and her heart thrummed wildly as she gazed up into his chiseled features and warm, gold-flecked eyes. Deep within, the muscles below her belly tightened and quivered. Her mouth felt dry, despite the wine. This was unquestionably erotic, yet at the same time…safe. An experience enjoyed by millions of women, though never her. Until now. The sexiest man she had ever met was about to perform, and she didn’t have to share this moment with anyone else.

MEET THE AUTHOR

elizabeth_harmon_5

I love stories that give a fresh take on classic themes, and feature characters and locations not often seen in romance. Give me a lovable, if less-than-perfect heroine, a gorgeous hero with a heart of gold, take them a little off the beaten path and I'm a happy girl.

I read a variety of genres-- romance to horror and just about everything in between. I am a member of Romance Writers of America. I have worked as a freelance journalist for a number of local publications and am a contributing writer to Romance Writers Report.

When I'm not writing, I love to ice skate, bike ride, hang out at the beach or on my front porch. I love vintage homes, adventurous cooking, spending time with my family and traveling.

Release~Sins of Lethe by Arden Aoide

Sins of Lethe

Sins Of Lethe
by Arden Aoide

SYNOPSIS

My name is Shula.
Today is my wedding day.
Today is the day I die.

What would you do if you were betrothed to a monster?
Could you be tied to a man whose most
terrible secrets are buried with the dead?
What if you were given a way out?
 Would you take it?
Even if it meant you would never truly be free?

A Consummation pulls you into
a patriarchal society of secessionist Texas.
It's far too real to be merely dystopian or futuristic.
It is hopeless from the first sentence,
but even though the outcome is bleak,
we want to be a witness to Shula Kelley's last day.
We find that it is not her last day, but a first of many.
We follow her and the desperate lust
she feels for her husband Jared,
despite archaic gender roles.

Not To Be gives us first person narratives
of the mother and father of the current Agnesson clan.
It's a captivating exploration of unapologetic psychopathy
as you see James through the lens of his young bride.
Devoutly takes us across Texas,
 the States, and Mexico.
The lives that James Agnesson has touched
wait quietly on the sidelines while he
distracts himself with judging the sins
of others and the wives of his youngest sons.

Shula and Jared still explore desires
 that contradict their conditioning,
while Jude convinces himself that
gender is irrelevant when he beds his new wife, Clara.

In To Be Wished,
Jared battles his own demons with tragic results.
Jude gives his father an ultimatum,
and we meet a new brother who
has traveled to the States to spread the Good News.

This introduction into the Sins of Lethe
world is both seductive and distressing,
and will leave you breathless.
I am not afraid of death.
Because my mother taught me there are far worse things.
But with Jared by my side,
I'm ready to live.

The Color of Vengeance by Kim Headlee ~ Review & #Giveaway

The Color of Vengeance
The Dragon's Dove Chronicles
(standalone excerpt from Book 2, Morning's Journey)
by Kim Iverson Headlee
GENRE – Early Medieval Historical Fiction
PUBLICATION DATE – August 2013

SYNOPSIS

Vengeance was the only burial gift he could bestow.
When Angli cattle thieves slaughter his wife and son,
Dwras son of Gwyn vows revenge upon their murderers.
But how can a mere farmer prevail against ruthless,
trained warriors?
For the answer Dwras must look not to his sword,
but within his heart.

ONE-CLICK & TBR

Dwras jabbed the offending warrior on the shoulder. With a grunt, the man swung his head around to fix narrow eyes upon him.
“What d’ye want?”
“My seat. I want it back.” Dwras lowered his eyebrows. “Now!”
“You—what?” The Lothian warrior’s laughter nearly made him choke. A grinning companion slapped his back.
“Oho, Farmer Dwras thinks he’s one of us, lads,” chortled another warrior, making a shooing motion. “Be off with you! Back to your pigs, farmer boy.”
They burst into cackles, hoots, and hog calls. Dwras felt his cheeks flush.
The warrior in Dwras’s seat found himself buried under sops and ale.
“My mistake, sir.” He grinned devilishly. “I thought this was the sty.”

MY THOUGHTS

I went into this book expecting more of a fantasy element than a “knights in armor” element. But, that being said, I still enjoyed the book. It was well done and I didn’t find any issues with the work at all. I think that it is a book that anyone who likes knights, will LOVE.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250 yearold house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the midtwentieth century— seem to be sticking around for a while yet.
Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of twentiethcentury Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Lydia escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventhcentury protoViking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.
For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels under her imprint, Pendragon Cove Press. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original editions of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster, ISBN 0671020412) and Liberty (writing as Kimberly Iverson, HQN Books, Harlequin, ISBN 0373771347).
