Review/Tour~Jude Magdalyn Series by L.M. Pruitt

THIS SERIES IS NOT A SET OF STANDALONE BOOKS FOR ME. ORIGINALLY I WAS ONLY GOING TO REVIEW BOOK 4 & 5, BUT I WAS SO FREAKING LOST THAT I HAD TO GET THE FIRST 3 BOOKS AS WELL. BELOW IS EACH BOOK AND IT'S SYNOPSIS, AS WELL AS MY THOUGHTS OF EACH. AND YES, I KNOW THAT THE BOOKS ARE IN THE REVERSE ORDER. THAT IS BECAUSE THE TOUR IS ACTUALLY ON BOOKS 4 & 5, SO THEY COME FIRST. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET AHEAD OF YOURSELF, SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM AND WORK UP. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS SERIES AS I DID! FOR AN OVERALL RATING OF THE SERIES, I DEFINITELY GIVE 4-4.5 STARS!!!

And no matter what it takes--
no matter what tool must be used--
no matter the cost--
I will have it.

MY THOUGHTS

THIS IS THE LAST BOOK IN THE JUDE MAGDALYN SERIES, EXCEPT FOR SMALL PARTS THAT ARE ONLY GOING TO BE ON L.M. PRUITT'S WEBSITE. BEING THE SHORTEST BOOK IN THE SERIES, IT WAS GOOD BUT LEFT SOME THINGS UNRESOLVED FOR ME, ESPECIALLY WITH IT BEING THE LAST! BUT, LET'S FACE IT, IF WE ARE REALLY INTO A SERIES...WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE THINGS UNRESOLVED AND WISH IT COULD GO ON FOREVER! I GIVE 4 STARS!

Shades of Loss
Jude Magdalyn Series

Tennessee Williams.

Fact--He'll use anything--and anyone--to help him reach that goal.

The only way to save myself--
my family--
the entire Covenant--
is to find the answer to one simple question.

Who is the traitor?

MY THOUGHTS

SO THIS IS WHERE I INTENDED TO START REVIEWING, BUT I AM SO THANKFUL THAT I STARTED AT THE BEGINNING! I HAVE NOW FOLLOWED JUDE THROUGH HER ENTIRE PREGNANCY AND THE ISSUES SHE'S HAD TO DEAL WITH. NOW, SHE IS FINALLY AT THE END AND GETTING READY TO POP, BUT NOBODY IS LETTING HER EVEN CHILL OUT! SHE LITERALLY SITS DOWN AND IT SEEM SOMEONE ELSE IS COMING THROUGH A DIFFERENT DOOR, BRINGING HER ANOTHER PROBLEM TO GO DEAL WITH! BUT ANYWAY, THIS BOOK WAS SHORTER THAN THE PREVIOUS 3 AND IT DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE AS MUCH HEART POURED INTO IT. IT'S LIKE I COULD TELL THAT THE AUTHOR WAS ALREADY WISHING THE SERIES WAS DONE. MAYBE, SINCE I ALREADY KNEW THAT THE SERIES WAS OVER, I WAS MORE OBSERVANT? I'M NOT SURE, BUT IT WAS STILL A GOOD BOOK. 4 STARS!

Shades of Blood
Jude Magdalyn Series
Book Three
BY L.M. Pruitt
Genre: Paranomarl

SYNOPSIS

If it's not one thing, it's another.

Felipe, one of New Orleans's most infamous--
and crazy--vampires is back in town.
And to say he's unhappy is an understatement.

Duprees and Williams have to track down Felipe,
fast, before he claims any more victims.
If that means making a deal with the Devil--
otherwise known as St. Germaine--
and using an untrained dhampir, so be it.

If that wasn't enough,
I've also got rebellious teenagers,
feuding couples,
and a suddenly full social calendar.

The more things change....

MY THOUGHTS

BESIDES PREGNANT CHARACTERS, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I LOVE IN A SERIES?? WHEN THE NEXT BOOK PICKS UP RIGHT WHERE THE LAST ONE LEFT ME! YES!!!! IF THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN, I'M ALWAYS LEFT WONDERING WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED IN THE TIME CHUNK?! THANKFULLY, I DIDN'T HAVE TO WONDER BECAUSE MY LITTLE BUTT WAS PUT RIGHT BACK INTO THE THICK OF IT! LOTS OF ACTION AND SUSPENSE GOING ON IN THIS BOOK! IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT A SLOW MOVING PAGE TURNER. 4.5 STARS!

Shades of Desire
Jude Magdalyn Series
Book Two
BY L.M. Pruitt
Genre: Paranormal

SYNOPSIS

All I wanted was a little peace and quiet.

Instead, I've got dead Covenant members
and a steady stream of letters
from the new guy in town.
His beverage of choice?
A 2002 Merlot, with a shot or two
 of powerful virgin blood.

On top of that,
I'm breaking in a new police liaison,
 failing at playing matchmaker,
and fighting nausea like it's a full time job.

Did I forget to mention that I've
also got enough girls living at the Crossroads
to start my own boarding school?

Peace and quiet? Out the window.

--Jude Magdalyn Henries

MY THOUGHTS

BOOK 2 WAS JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST BOOK IN THIS SERIES!!! I LOVE IT WHEN ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN A SERIES GETS PREGNANT AND WE GET TO FOLLOW THAT PREGNANCY ALONG...ESPECIALLY WHEN SOME EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING INVOLVING SAID CHARACTER! WE HAVE THE DEVELOPING PREGNANCY, AND NOW WE ADD IN A BUNDLE OF CHILD-TEEN COVENANT MEMBERS TO THE MIX....YOU GET SOME PRETTY INTERESTING SITUATIONS! 4.5 STARS!

Shades of Gray
Jude Magdalyn Series
Book One
BY L.M. Pruitt

SYNOPSIS

Jude Magdalyn Henries lives what many would call an unconventional life.

Orphaned at birth, raised by nuns, a teenage runaway living on the streets... she now earns a living at odd jobs, including one as a fake tarot card reader. Very little about Jude's life appears normal, by any scale. When she accepts a gig to do a private reading,

unconventional takes on an entirely new meaning. Life as she knows it ends when she's thrust into a world she never knew existed-one filled with magic, vampires, and her beloved New Orleans on the verge of an underground war. To make matters worse, she's got two men in her life vying for attention, Williams and Theo. Both call to a different part of her, but one scares her just a little bit. Can she step up to the challenges set before her and make the right choices for the "greater" greater good"?

MY THOUGHTS

BEING THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES, WE GET TO LEARN THE BACK STORY ON JUDE, WHICH IS GREAT! I LOVE TO SEE WHERE MY CHARACTERS HAVE COME FROM BEFORE I FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM. I DEFINITELY ENJOYED THIS RIDE WITH JUDE, WALKING WITH HER AS SHE LEARNS SOME CREEPY AND CONFUSING STIFF, MEETING SOME HUNKY BUT FRUSTRATING MEN (AREN'T THEY ALWAYS? LOL), AND JUST TRYING TO MAKE HER WAY. IT WAS A GREAT BOOK AND I GIVE 5 STARS!!!

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?

--I’ve always been a lover of stories, no matter the format—books, movies, songs, and so on. One day, I decided I wanted to be someone who told stories as well as someone who enjoyed them.

What genre(s) do you write in?

--Most of my work is in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, because those are the genres I read the most myself.

What was the first book you ever wrote?

--I remember being in middle school and passing a notebook around with my friends—we’d each write a chapter and then pass to the next person. I have no idea what it was about but I do remember we kept it going for maybe half the school year.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?

--I can’t say I have one specific favorite book but my favorite series is the Winged series.

And what makes this your favorite? A certain scene, character, plot?

--This was a story I’d wanted to write for a long time and I kept putting it off to focus on works readers were asking me for. Finally, I decided to just write what I wanted to and it was one of the best decisions ever.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

--I don’t have one. It took me a long time to figure out that I am not the sort of writer who does well
with routines, at least not for the long haul—eventually I get bored with them and rebel.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

--Knowing that simply because I have the ability to write a book in two weeks doesn’t mean I actually have to write a book in two weeks. I’ve always been very hard on myself in terms of production and timelines but I’m learning to be a little easier.

What is your favorite thing about writing?

--Just telling stories. As I said previously, I’ve always been a big lover of stories so finally being able to share mine with others is truly wonderful.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

--Anywhere and everywhere—conversations, songs, dreams. There really is no limit to where I find
inspiration.

Who is your author inspiration?

--I would have to say Nora Roberts, both for the sheer number of books she’s written and the emotion she’s able to invoke.

***Blogger comment~Nora Roberts is my favorite author!!!

What is your favorite book of all time?

--There is no possible way I could answer this question—at least not with one choice that I would stick to permanently.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

--Doing very, very awesome things.

EXCERPT

My front door opened with a loud creak, but my mother didn’t stir. She lay on our faded, torn couch in the fetal position, her arms wrapped around her stomach. By the way she creased her brow and groaned, her sleep seemed uneasy. She must have stayed up as long as possible after hearing the news.

She wasn’t a fighter anymore and, with no useful ability, she would not be called on to help with the search. I pulled the blue and grey blanket from her bed and draped it over her. She twitched slightly, but didn’t wake.

Tomorrow, she would ask so many questions and I didn’t look forward to answering them.

I shut the door to my tiny bedroom and lay down. Pyke had once told me my bed was lumpy and my pillow was thin, but I had never noticed. I stared at the ceiling, a mix of wood and metal. I didn’t feel tired. I didn’t feel anything.

It was like there was a gaping hole inside me, numb to everything.

I wondered what Kyra was doing. Was she sleeping? Still being looked after by the healers? Was she helping out?

If she could have it her way, she’d be fighting Blooders with the Guardjinn. The power coming from her tonight was so strong and so dangerous. I saw my own hatred reflected in her eyes as she killed mercilessly and it alarmed me.

I pulled off my suit and threw it on the floor, not clothes anymore but a collection of shredded material. I lay back, took a deep breath and allowed my ability to deactivate. The cold hit me straight away. It seeped into my skin, all the way to my bones. My limbs quivered and I pulled my blanket around my shoulders, huddled in a ball.

I still wasn’t completely used to feeling things. The small cuts on my skin stung slightly and my muscles ached as I trembled. What hurt the most though wasn’t the physical but the emotional.

Pyke was dead.

My best friend had been killed before my eyes. I had failed to protect Mia from the pain of the truth. And Kyra …

I wished I could wrap my arms around her for warmth and comfort. I wished I could lie there with her, breathing in the scent of cinnamon and apples. I wanted her and yet I told her we couldn’t be together. It was true, of course. I knew what would happen to me now Ivan had seen us together.

She was naive to think we would be accepted. I’d seen it before, what happened when a Guardjinn and a Djinn went public. It didn’t end well, especially for the Guardjinn.

I knew the facts, I knew the consequences. Yet I longed for her touch. I couldn’t have it both ways. Be the loyal Guardjinn I had trained my whole life to become or love a Djinn betraying everything I believed in. I couldn’t have both and even though the choice seemed obvious I couldn’t make a decision.

Review~Voices & Whispers by R.E. Rowe

I was given the opportunity to read both of these books recently. I wasn't sure what to expect from books with a reincarnation twist to it. Though I was skeptical, I was very happy that I had this opportunity! What follows is each book and it's summary, as well as my thoughts on each one. Before you go pick up Voices (which is free), you need to go ahead and buy Whispers (only $0.99) while you're there. Voices does end on a cliffhanger, but Whispers picks up immediately afterwards though, so there's no time lapse...you get to just continue on in this great journey! Here we go....

Voices
Reincarnation Book 1
by R.E. Rowe

SYNOPSIS

In a small town in Arkansas, two lives that seemingly have nothing in common will converge and change each other forever. A brilliant but tormented street artist and an ex-track star whose career was cut short by a heart condition.

Aimee DeLuca had a promising athletic career before her heart gave out during a high school track and field contest. Aimee struggles to find her was after spending time with a deceased grandmother during a near death experience. Reizo Rush is a street artist whose torment fuels his desire to add color to the gray walls of the city. But Reizo's tagging and the two voices only he hears land him in perpetual trouble with both his teachers and the law.

During a chance encounter, the two quickly find out they have much more in common than love. When they stumble upon a century-old storm cellar hidden underground on Aimee's uncle's ranch, they unearth a cellar full of artifacts and a hundred-year-old Will. Once the news of the discovery leaks out, a drug-dealing teen and a mysterious soul names General are determined to bury the truth along with anyone who gets in their way.

MY THOUGHTS

The story of Ames and Reiz is one that was beautiful, heart breaking, upsetting, and loving all at the same time. So much happened in this book that I cannot say very much without giving spoilers, which is something that I do not do while writing reviews. I do suggest that you stick with the story, as the first bit is a little slow. If you will stick with it, then you will get a story unlike any that I have ever read. This is an AWESOME story that you will not be disappointed in reading!!
DEFINITELY A 5 STAR BOOK!!

WHISPERS
Reincarnation Book 2
by R.E. Rowe

SYNOPSIS

In this paranormal thriller sequel to Voices, the war to create a prefect reincarnation system begins.

General believes the existing system is already perfect: to know "joy" every soul must experience "suffering". But a rogue soul named Carmina believes the system is outdated and flawed. She is determined to prove that joy can exist without suffering.

When Carmina and her team of reincarnated teenagers hack the system to change its outdated rules, Reizo is recruited to stop them. But Reizo could care less about rules or any ridiculous system until a mysterious soul named General leaves him no choice.

Follow Carmina, Reizo and Aimee in their extraordinary journey to make the reincarnation system perfect.

MY THOUGHTS

WOW! Talk about some action!! Whispers was packed full of it! We pick up in Whispers right where we left off in Voices. Here we get to go on a journey along with some old friends, and also meet some new ones. It's an amazing journey too! I found a few grammatical and spelling errors in this book, but nothing that messes up the flow of the book. You seriously need to check this book out!!
I GIVE 4.5 STARS, ONLY DUE TO THE ERRORS I FOUND, OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE 5 STARS.

SYNOPSIS

There’s a fine line between sexy alpha and creepy stalker…and Rye has crossed it.

RYE MUST DIE is a SHORT NOVELLA by USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Dakota Madison and Savannah Young. It can be read as a STANDALONE or as part of the ongoing series.

Izzy Grant is supposed to be dead, suicide by hanging. But when she regains consciousness she’s still alive and still the crazy girl voted Most Likely to Kill Herself in high school. She’s still the girl who everyone in Old Town loves to hate.

But one thing had changed. He saved her life, a man wearing all black and riding a motorcycle. He pulled her down from the tree and made sure she was still breathing.

Now he’s following her. Izzy doesn’t know why, but she’s eager to find out.

EXCERPT

Prologue

I gasp for breath. Then I cough. The brisk air stings my lungs.

I’m on the cold, hard ground, not hanging from the tree like I’m supposed to be, and I’m definitely not dead.

When I open my eyes I’m glad it’s dusk. I don’t think I could take the glare of the sun right now. Dusk was always my favorite time of day, when nature’s light is fading away.

My neck feels raw, but there’s no rope on it. I search around me, but the rope seems to have vanished.

I spot a guy dressed in all black. He’s sitting on a black H-D Iron 883, very similar to the motorcycle I ride.

A shiver runs through me when I realize the guy is watching me.

He must have been the one who did it. He cut me down from the tree. I have a vague memory of a struggle. Of strong arms grabbing me and holding me tight. I fought against him, but I was hopelessly outmatched.

I wanted to die but I realized he wasn’t going to let me.

Then I blacked out, and woke up on the ground.

I wonder how long he’s going to sit there. It’s almost like he’s guarding me. Then he opens a black satchel on his bike and removes a rope—my rope—and holds it up for me to see.

I feel like he’s taunting me with it. Why does this asshole care if I live or die?

When I give him the finger he doesn’t respond. He just puts on his dark helmet and speeds away, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake.

I think about some of the other ways I could kill myself, but those methods leave a margin of error that I’m not comfortable with. I don’t want to jump in front of a moving truck only to be paralyzed for life and still not dead.

Besides, I’m suddenly hungry and craving a burger and fries in the worst way. I guess today is not the day for me to die.

Six Weeks Later

Another exciting day at the Old Town Antique Shop. I’ve had only two customers and only one who actually bought something. It’s a good thing the building is completely paid for, I live right upstairs, and my grandmother was extremely generous to me in her will. I certainly couldn’t afford to run a real business on the pittance the store makes on a weekly basis.

I would have been out of Old Town by now if my grandmother didn’t croak. And she didn’t stipulate in her will that I had to keep the antique shop running in order to get the money she entrusted to me. I’m the last living member of the Grant family and I now have the honor of running the business that’s been in our family for generations.

I glance down at the stash of romance novels I keep hidden under the counter. I know they’re cheesy, but right now they’re the only things that are keeping me from slashing my wrists when I’m in the bathtub. They give me the slightest bit of hope that maybe someday; someone will love the town pariah. Even the meanest girls in romance novels always get the guy.

I’m deep in a very hot sex scene when I’m startled by the little bell that chimes when the front door opens.

I’m even more surprised by the guy who walks into my shop. Or more like strolls in. He’s wearing a wild flowered Hawaiian shirt over a red Green Day T-shirt, faded cargo pants and red converse high tops. He runs his hands through his mop of sun-bleached blond hair, but it doesn’t help. Old Town is always windy, but his hair isn’t just windblown. It’s a little too long and looks shaggy.

He’s definitely not from Old Town.

After giving me a quick once over he grins. His grin is too wide and his teeth are too perfect and too white. I already hate him.

“You know we’re nowhere near the shore?” I try not to sound as disgusted as this guy is making me.

He laughs. He seems like the kind of guy who laughs easily. I hate him even more.

“I’m not here to surf.”

I give him a once over. “You could have fooled me.”

He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a shiny business card. He wiggles it in my face so the light overhead reflects off of it.

I rip the card out of his hand just to make the glare stop. “What’s wrong with you?”

He laughs again, which makes me even more perturbed. Not that it’s difficult to do. Most people are able to get on my bad side pretty quickly.

“Do you want a list?” He raises an eyebrow at me.

I shake my head and examine his card:

Old Town Ghost Tours. Max Elliot, Paranormal Investigator.

Great. Not only is he starting to be the most annoying person on the planet, he’s also one of those ghost hunting freaks.

I try to hand the card back to him, but he puts his hands up and shakes them at me. “The card is yours to keep.”

If I had a trash can close I’d make a point of throwing the thing inside of it, but the trash can is on the other side of this weirdo and I don’t feel like walking past him to get to it.

“You didn’t answer my question.” I glare at him.

“What’s wrong with me?” He looks down at his watch, which I now notice has Mickey Mouse on it. “How much time do you have?”

I give an exasperated sigh. “What can I help you with?”

He grins again. Boy does this guy like to smile a lot. He must think it’s charming, and maybe some girls are into that, but I’m definitely not one of them. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve smiled so far this year.

And I don’t go for blonds and definitely not beach boy blonds with big smiles. I prefer the dark and dangerous type, all in black leather, preferably riding a motorcycle.

“I’d love for you to go out with me, but we can negotiate that later. I’m here to see Alberta Grant. Something tells me that you’re not Alberta.”

“I’m Izzy Grant,” I reply, but I’m not sure why. I don’t really want anything to do with this guy.

“What’s Izzy short for?”

I frown. “Izzy.”

No one calls me by my given name, and definitely not this guy. I only give it out on a need-to-know basis.

“Okay, Izzy. How can I find Alberta?”

I narrow my eyes at him. “You’re obviously not from around here.”

“Why would you say that?”

“Well, you’re not wearing jeans and cowboy boots for starters.” And you have no idea my grandmother is dead. Everyone in town knows that.

He points to his business card lying on the counter. “Just moved here. I’m trying to start a business.”

“In Old Town?”

He nods. “I’m going to capitalize on the popularity of the Tawnee Mountain Resort. The guests need some nighttime entertainment and ghost hunting is really popular right now.”

I don’t feel like stating the obvious. That there’s no such thing as ghosts.

I decide to play with the guy because he’s annoying and it’s not like I have anything better to do.

“Alberta isn’t here right now, but I can take you to her.”

He grins again. Oh how I wish I could just slap that big grin right off of his perfect, beach boy face. Then he looks around the place. “Are you sure you aren’t too busy?”

I narrow my gaze at him. “I’ll make time for you.”

“See, you already like me.”

If he only knew.

I lock up the store and hang up my OUT TO LUNCH sign. Max follows me to the small parking lot on the side of the store.

I stop in front of my old Harley H-D Iron 883. “Do you want a ride? I’ve got an extra helmet.”

He laughs. “There is no way I’m riding on the back of a chick’s motorcycle.”

I point a finger in his face. “I’m not a chick. And if you ever call me that again, I’ll rip your dick off.”

He puts his hands up. “Okay, chill. It’s just an expression. Can we take my car instead?”

I glance at the bright red Mini Cooper parked at the other end of the parking lot. “That’s not a real vehicle. That’s a clown car.”

“This isn’t just any Mini Cooper. It’s a special limited edition.”

I frown. “Just an FYI. If you plan on living in Old Town you’ll attract a lot less attention if you’re driving a pickup, preferably a Ford or a Dodge Ram.”

He grins. Another one of those huge grins that irritate every nerve in my body. “Who says I don’t want attention?”

I shake my head. “Never mind.”

I’m short, only about five feet two inches, and I’m worried about fitting inside that car. I have no idea how Max, who’s easily a foot taller than me, fits inside of it.

“Okay, we can take your car,” I agree, but only because I want to see how he squeezes inside that thing.

He pulls his keys from his pocket and starts throwing them in the air like he’s juggling with them. The guy has no shortage of ways to completely annoy me.

To my surprise Max fits into his car better than I imaged he would. He’s got the seat pushed back as far as it will go, so his legs aren’t cramped.

“You could buy a bigger car,” I say as I snap on my seat belt. “Being such a big guy.”

He laughs. “Are you kidding? This car is a chick magnet. I’ve known you less than fifteen minutes and I’ve already got you inside of it.”

When he winks at me I feel a little bile rise in my throat like I want to vomit. “Just so we’re clear. You’re not my type.”

He waves the comment off like a mosquito. “I’m everyone’s type.”

“Not mine,” I repeat.

“You won’t know for sure until you’ve had a chance to test the goods.” Then he winks at me.

Now I’m really going to be sick. “I’m not interested in testing any of your goods. Do you want to see my grandmother or not?”

He heaves a sigh. “Tell me where to drive.”

Five minutes later we pull up to the Old Town Cemetery. As soon as Max parks the car he turns and looks at me. “Is this your idea of a joke?”

“You’re the ghost hunter. Isn’t this like your Valhalla or something?”

He rolls his eyes at me. “Most graveyards aren’t haunted. Spirits like to stay close to loved ones, or places they were most familiar with before they died.”

“Whatever you say.” I open the door and hop out of his clown car.

I’m surprised when he follows. Part of me thought he’d just turn the engine back on and speed away.

As I open the cemetery gate I’m overwhelmed with sadness…again. It’s been happening a lot lately…ever since my grandmother died. She was the last of my relatives, and now I’m alone in the world. Not that I’m not used to being a loner. I’m known for it. But being alone, without any family to anchor me, makes me feel truly lost.

Alberta Grant wasn’t the nicest person in the world, but she was my rock. She lived to be ninety, and from what I’ve heard around town, spent at least forty of those years being a cantankerous old broad, who was both feared and admired.

I seem to be following in her footsteps. Except for the ad-mired part. People in Old Town say I’m freak and a bitch and tend to steer clear.

And I’m okay with that.

When I find my grandmother’s headstone I clear away the leaves that have fallen on it.

“How did she die?” Max asks. His tone is actually sincere. He’s finally dropped the overdone surfer-boy salesman act.

“She was old. Ninety.”

He nods. “Do you miss her?”

“More than I ever thought I would.”

He’s actually quiet as he stands there with me. He’s slightly attractive when he’s not talking. It’s when he opens his pie hole that he’s a complete turn off.

As we drive back toward the antique shop I have a brief moment of panic when Max passes right by it.

“You missed my stop.”

“I know,” he says matter-of-factly.

“Let me out. Now.” I can feel my pulse start to race. I briefly consider jumping out of the car, but I’m not wearing my leather today so the pavement would definitely hurt as I slid across it.

“It’s okay.” When Max glances over at me, I can see concern in his eyes. “I’m just going to take you to lunch. My treat.”

I take in a deep breath and try to calm my frayed nerves. “Lunch?”

“You put an OUT TO LUNCH sign on your door,” he reminds me. “So I’m taking you to lunch.”

“You’ll do anything for a date, won’t you?”

“So you’re actually going on a date with me?” He grins. “And here I thought you were a tough girl.”

I huff. “Do I have a choice? You kind of have me trapped in your clown car.”

When he glances over at me his eyes have turned serious. “You always have a choice. Don’t ever forget that.”

I nod, but we’re both quiet as we head back into the center of Old Town.

If only all guys thought the way he does, my life wouldn’t be a complete and total mess.

SYNOPSIS

Aphrodite, goddess of love and lust, is not impressed. After giving up her penthouse suite in trendy Manhattan to go monster hunting around the world, she finds herself in a sad hotel room in Vancouver with a decidedly distracted Loki. She hadn't expected this job to be so serious, and her Norse partner isn't exactly bowing to her whims these days. What was the point in coming with him if they weren’t beneath the sheets all hours of the day? It seems like such a waste of sexual compatibility. Humph.

Meanwhile, Loki, Norse trickster, is equally unimpressed. He hadn't thought taking on a beautiful partner would make his work so difficult. Her unfocused energy grates on his nerves, and his lust for her is only surpassed by his desire for more godly power. He will complete this job, whether she likes it or not, and he’ll walk away one step closer to regaining his old abilities. Now, if only he can get his partner to focus on the task at hand, not seduction. Ridiculous woman.

Aphrodite and Loki, an unlikely team if there ever was one, find themselves in the City of Vancouver hunting vampires. The job is pretty straightforward: rescue the damsel, kill the monster. Unfortunately, even the easiest of jobs hardly ever go according to plan.

EXCERPT

She took back everything she said about Vancouver’s beauty in the springtime. Not twenty minutes after Aphrodite stepped out of the shower, the skies opened—and stayed open. Rain and sleet threatened to ruin her gorgeous Louboutin pumps, ravenous winds destroyed her blown-out hair, and thunder made the car windows rattle. Loki seemed unperturbed by the weather; it wasn’t like the rain could make his hair look any less slicked back. She shot him a somewhat bitter look, but he missed it, his eyes on the road.

Still, he looked quite fetching, and she knew it was on purpose. He’d sent for his jacket to be ironed again after their tryst, and even removed the two studs in his ears. He’d donned a pricey wristwatch and polished leather shoes. To bring the whole look together, he’d smoothed down his wild hair and tied it in place. If she didn’t know any better, the man next to her could have been royalty—or at least an investment banker, which was practically the same in some circles. Her attraction heightened seeing him so well-kept, her lust revving up again with a mind of its own. It took every ounce of self-restraint not to ruin either of their outfits by climbing onto him just before they left.

And oh, how she’d desperately wanted to.

Aphrodite huffed miserably, brushing the rainwater off her coat and onto the seat of their rental car. It was absurd that neither of them had an umbrella, and even more ludicrous that the front desk staff didn’t have one to lend on hand. But at least her dress wasn’t sullied. She pulled down the visor and pushed the mirror cover aside. Loki groaned when she turned on the little light above the dashboard, and she batted his hand away when he tried to turn it off.

“You look fine.”

She shook her head, running her pinky under her eyelids to fix the slightly smudged eyeliner. “You were the one who made such a fuss about how I look tonight. You can’t be annoyed with me for doing the same thing.”

“I can’t see the road with the light on the window—”

“Well, it’s not like we’d actually die in a car crash, would we?” She ducked down to find the lipstick in her clutch. After running it along her lips twice, she puckered them, fixed them with a finger, and then switched the light off.

Loki reached for the radio.

She’d chosen black attire to match Loki, the only hint of colour coming from the red on her lips and the bottoms of her shoes. Her dress was fitted yet conservative: a high neckline, cut-off at mid-thigh, and sleeves to her elbows. Overall, Aphrodite thought she looked tantalizing. Loki had merely given her a nod of approval.

She’d never admit how much it bothered her that he didn’t openly drool over her, especially when she’d put effort into her look.

The rental car eventually slowed at a cul-de-sac, and Aphrodite did a quick sweep of the area—well, what she could see through the curtain of rain, anyway. It was an ostentatious neighbourhood in West Vancouver, one with perfectly trimmed hedges and an obscene amount of lawn between each house. The streetlights gave off a warm yellow glow, similar to the bedside lamps in their hotel room, and Aphrodite assumed this would be a comfortable area to raise a family in.

However, she guessed she’d smell the marital discord as soon as she stepped out of the car; that was always the way in these sorts of places. Hera would be more adept at finding a solution, surely, while Aphrodite was more inclined to revel in the stink of lust and jealousy.

“Now, when we’re in there, don’t be afraid to use those legs,” Loki instructed, placing a hand on her damp knee. “They look very nice in that dress.”

Ah, so he was capable of a compliment. She licked her lips and re-crossed her legs, shifting them out of his reach.

“Would you give that same instruction if your partner was a man?” She raised an eyebrow at him defiantly.

He chuckled. “If he had legs like yours, of course.”
