INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?

--I’ve always been a lover of stories, no matter the format—books, movies, songs, and so on. One day, I decided I wanted to be someone who told stories as well as someone who enjoyed them.

What genre(s) do you write in?

--Most of my work is in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, because those are the genres I read the most myself.

What was the first book you ever wrote?

--I remember being in middle school and passing a notebook around with my friends—we’d each write a chapter and then pass to the next person. I have no idea what it was about but I do remember we kept it going for maybe half the school year.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?

--I can’t say I have one specific favorite book but my favorite series is the Winged series.

And what makes this your favorite? A certain scene, character, plot?

--This was a story I’d wanted to write for a long time and I kept putting it off to focus on works readers were asking me for. Finally, I decided to just write what I wanted to and it was one of the best decisions ever.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

--I don’t have one. It took me a long time to figure out that I am not the sort of writer who does well
with routines, at least not for the long haul—eventually I get bored with them and rebel.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

--Knowing that simply because I have the ability to write a book in two weeks doesn’t mean I actually have to write a book in two weeks. I’ve always been very hard on myself in terms of production and timelines but I’m learning to be a little easier.

What is your favorite thing about writing?

--Just telling stories. As I said previously, I’ve always been a big lover of stories so finally being able to share mine with others is truly wonderful.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

--Anywhere and everywhere—conversations, songs, dreams. There really is no limit to where I find
inspiration.

Who is your author inspiration?

--I would have to say Nora Roberts, both for the sheer number of books she’s written and the emotion she’s able to invoke.

***Blogger comment~Nora Roberts is my favorite author!!!

What is your favorite book of all time?

--There is no possible way I could answer this question—at least not with one choice that I would stick to permanently.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

--Doing very, very awesome things.

INTERVIEW

What made you want to write?

I was motivated by the challenge. I also wanted to publish something. Seeing as I am not an artist, or
musician. Writing a book turned out to be a perfect fit for me.

What genre(s) do you write in?

I write a variety of genres. I don’t want to be that one genre author. The Malevolent Twin is a mystery, psychological thriller, and suspense. I admire these genres because they keep readers interested.

What was the first book you ever wrote?

Well, the Malevolent Twin is my first published book. I did however attempt to write a good in my
juvenile days. Long story short, it was about a mafia princess who ran her dad’s empire as a teenager. I never did finish it. I got to maybe thirty pages, and quit. I will probably never resume that project…

What is your favorite out of all of your books?

Mai’s Exuberance.

And what makes this your favorite?

My Mai character is pretty wacky. She is a misunderstood, and perverted little stalker.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

I try to write every day! Sometimes, I have a drink in my hand to relieve the pressure. I write with a buzz, never drunk. You don’t want to write drunk. My favorite drinks, include rumchata, strawberry daiquiris, and butter scotch Asian -----> (only available at one restaurant franchise, as far as I know).

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

I struggle with finding an editor, and graphic designer. Biggest struggle was the constructive criticism my editor gave me. At times, he was vicious. I got over it, and send him the manuscript back with
corrections. After the final edit, he gave me his approval, and said “Well done!” That is when I knew, I could satisfy anyone!

What is your favorite thing about writing?

Doing the cover art for my book is fun. I like typing the details of how I want my book to look, and then like magic my graphic designer converts the image I had into a visual presentation.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

Most of my ideas come from dreams, I have. Also when conversing with my muse, I come up with ideas.

What is your favorite book of all time?

I really enjoyed reading Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. After the sixth book, I stopped reading.
Artemis became an adult, and less fun. I really enjoy his character. He is a tough guy, but has a soft spot for his mother. Fairies with weapons, genius! What drawled me in was the first book, Eoin placed Artemis in Vietnam. Throughout the series Artemis travels to various locations throughout the world. I really like his travelling. Not the ordinary character, you would expect from a children’s book.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

I want to see myself as successful author. I want to have several published works out by then. Maybe
even able to support myself through my books. If not, I am going to enjoy the ride.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?

I’m not sure how other authors start out but I did not start out intending to write a book. I just had this creative side of me that made me feel like I needed to write. I love books so much that it evolved into writing when I couldn’t stop thinking about a certain story line. I envisioned scenes in my head and had to write them down. I have done that since I was a child. After a while the scenes developed into a story and then into a book.

What genre(s) do you write in?

Tragically Broken is Contemporary Romance as that is my favorite genre and what my imagination runs away with. HOWEVER, my first book (which is not yet published) is tween/young adult. I hope to rework that book and publish it soon. The idea for the book just appeared to me and the story developed. My books have a medical background in them because that’s what I know. Isn’t that what they say…”write what you know”?

What was the first book you ever wrote?

I have plenty of scenes that I have written down over time but my first true book is Altered. The book is about a family that has a genetic neuromuscular disease. It is a little sci-fi. It needs re-edited but then I hope to publish it.

What is your favorite out of all of your books?

My favorite is Tragically Broken. The story just wrenches my heart and I feel for Alex in so many ways. I couldn’t imagine surviving such tragedy. I have spent so much time writing, re-writing and
editing the book that I feel so close to her and Kellen. (I’m sure most authors feel the same way.) One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Alex comes home to Kellen after a long day at work and Kellen tells her that she never has to be alone again. I think that is when Alex realizes that she needs Kellen even though at that time she would never have admitted it.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

I don’t have one. With working full time I need to write whenever I get the opportunity. I do a lot of writing in the car when we are travel to my kid’s events. If an idea pops in my head I will jot it down on whatever is around- paper, napkin- whatever. I typically write start to finish and add in the different scenes I have imagined along the way. Once I edit then I add, subtract or change things around. I wish I had the time to dedicate to writing every day.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

Time-- I struggle with time. There is never enough time in one sitting to get everything down that I want to get down on paper. My plate is always full and there is never enough time to write, read, edit and live. But from the sounds of it on social media that is what a lot of authors struggle with.

What is your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is my also my favorite thing about reading—escaping into a fantasy land. It’s so easy to get lost in a good book and it’s equally as easy to get lost in writing a story.
Obviously every writer just hopes other people love the story just as much but in the end we all write for ourselves first.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

I have no idea where my ideas come from, they just seem to pop in my head. Obviously with a
medical background my books have a Grey’s anatomy feel to them. Anything can give me inspiration
especially reading other books.

Who is your author inspiration?

I’m not sure that I have one author inspiration. For most of use romance genre writers Stephanie Meyer and E.L. James are inspirational however Jamie McGuire, Gail McHugh, and a ton of other regular people who became authors show us that it just takes a good story to make yourself and others happy and be successful. Right now I am on a Helena Hunting kick and CANNOT wait for Pucked Up to be released.

What is your favorite book of all time?

I can’t say that I have one. I will always be a Twilight junkie and FSOG lover but there are so many that I’ve read multiple times -- the Thoughtless series by SC Stephens, Collide/Pulse by Gail McHugh. I can also even go old school with The Outsiders and Flowers in the Attic from when I was younger, they are classics.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

I hope to have a few novels written in the next 5 years. Obviously any author would like to have one, if not more, of their novels be on a best seller list but at this point I would just be grateful if a had a
decent number of people enjoy my work as much as I enjoy writing it.

Author tidbit~

I did have a first version of Tragically Broken that was published in 2014 that was not well edited. It had some mistakes and was too long. I have since had it re-edited and this version is so much better. I love it and I hope your readers will give it a read and love it too. The book is fun, yet heart wrenching at time with a HEA ending. It’s a great summer read.
I’m very thankful for all of my readers and all you bloggers. This crazy book world that we now exist in is so fun. I have developed friendships with people that I never would have before the world of
social media. I’ve gotten to read some excellent books that never would have gotten published if it
were not for the indie world. Hell, I wouldn’t be published if it wasn’t for the indie world. Thank you to all of you!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

If you have already read my book, then you have already seen into part of my soul. Each of my characters is a part of me. They each have some aspect of my personality, or represent who I wish I could be or would hate to be.

I have always been an avid reader, even as a child, and I’ve always loved to get lost in a good book. Reading a book would take over my life, and at times it still does. It is my addiction. Once I start a book, I cannot put it down until I know the end of the story … which may be a few books later. Same thing with writing – once the story pops into my head, I obsess about it until I have it down on paper. I have notes on scenes all over. Some have already been developed into a book, and some are waiting for the rest of the storyline to be written in order to find their journey and see where it ends.

For a decade, or more, I had to put all that creativity on hold while I dedicated my life to my professional career and creating my family. I have been blessed with a wonderful husband and two angelic children. Supporting and nurturing them is now my number one priority.

Once my life reached a stable point, I was finally able to find time to rekindle my love of books. Twilight took me by storm, which then catapulted me to Fifty Shades of Grey. “It all started with a vampire who was replaced by a man with a whip.” Reading tales written by my favorite authors reignited my own creativity, my mind wandered into stories of my own, and now, amazingly, I am an author.

When my time is not consumed watching my daughter dance or my son play hockey, spending time with my husband, or working, I am lost in either reading a good book or writing. Disney World is my respite and I love all things Mickey. My family and friends are incredible people and support me in all that I do. I have learned that life is too short, and we have to take time to enjoy its simple pleasures.

Burning Doors by Renee N. Meland

BURNING DOORS
The Extraction List Series Book 2
by Renee N. Meland

SYNOPSIS

Cain Foley committed his first murder before he could even drive a car…

Not that he would’ve had anywhere to drive to.
 When he was fifteen,
America was one of the poorest countries in the world,
and its’ citizens took their hatred of that fact
out on each other through gangs and violence.

Children barely tall enough for carnival rides
peppered the streets selling drugs (or themselves)
so they could buy their next meal.

Every night on the news,
Cain watched as an angelic blonde woman
who lost her own child swore she’d end it…

She assaulted America’s televisions
with praise for the Parental Morality Law:
a set of rules that spells out exactly what it takes
to be a parent in the eyes of the government,
and the consequences of breaking those rules.
He prayed every night that she’d come to rescue him
before his father took off his belt again.

Before she could save him, Cain faced a fatal choice…
Fight back or die on the basement floor.

He chose life.

Now on the run,
he finds himself being hunted by a police officer
with his own special brand of torture.
Before he can save even a handful of the children
who have been swept up in the gang life,
he must first cover up not one,
but two murders.
His father’s and one committed by a teenage madam
who is either the love of his life, or his final undoing.

As he feels himself being pushed further
 and further to the edge,
Cain realizes that surviving his father
 was just the beginning.

EXCERPT

The first time I killed someone, it was an accident. Though I guess it was the kind of accident that happens when you squeeze your hands around someone’s neck for too long, or when you shove someone who is standing too close to the edge of a building. In my case, I accidentally killed my father when I beat him to death with a pipe.

He had set me up that night, I’m sure of it. I was always careful to leave the TV volume down so I wouldn’t be caught. But when I flipped the power on that night, the news roared. The woman I wanted to see was there, giving a speech like always, but her voice came out with the force of thunder. Sweat drenched my body when I heard the door to my parents’ upstairs bedroom fly open and hit the wall. The foundation shook and so did my limbs. I sat frozen in a seated position as I heard his footsteps. All I could focus on were his shiny patent leather shoes coming toward me. Even in the middle of the night, he took the time to slip them on.

I could smell him before I even saw his feet. He constantly stunk of mouthwash and old cologne; it was some putrid mix of sandalwood and beach vacations that we would never take. He cackled as he stepped toward me, so the minty air from his breath reached me before his hand did. I felt my head hit the floor before I felt the familiar sting in my cheek.

“You’re so stupid. You really think you’ll ever leave here? Where do you think you’re going to go, huh? You need me. She hasn’t come for you and she never will!” He kicked me in the side with his foot.

My stomach clenched from the impact.

I usually kept quiet when he hit me. At most, I would agree with whatever he was saying to stop him before he did real damage.

It never worked.

No matter what I said, or didn’t say, the blows would keep coming. My mother was always conveniently upstairs, but no one can tell me she couldn’t hear the snap of his belt or the furniture rattle as he shoved me into it.

That night was different. Maybe it was watching the woman from the television, or maybe it was the way his smile stretched across his face as he struck me, I don’t know. But when he was finished and heading back upstairs, I spat towards him.

My cheeks burned as I did it. In fact, my whole body felt like it was on fire. But I’d be lying if I said I wished I could take it back. Even when he turned, eyes wide when he noticed the wad of saliva glistening on the concrete floor, I didn’t regret it one bit.

I may have even cracked a smile.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?
I wanted to write because when I was little, my favorite thing to do was “play pretend,” which was basically making up stories. Now I get paid for it.

What genre(s) do you write in?
I don’t really pick genres. I just come up with ideas and wherever they fall, they fall. Burning Doors happens to be sci-fi.

What was the first book you ever wrote?
We used to write books in my first grade class. I think it was about a girl raised by dinosaurs.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?
I would have to say Burning Doors.

And what makes this your favorite?
Cain, the main character, is by far my favorite character I’ve ever created. I adore him.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?
I try to write for at least an hour a day, but it doesn’t always happen. But I tend to find a way to produce fairly quickly, so I guess it works out.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?
Getting through the scenes that need to be in the novel in order to develop certain things, but aren’t necessarily exciting.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
I get to create new worlds and people that area as real to me as anything else.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?
Anywhere and everywhere.

Who is your author inspiration and why?
Chuck Palahniuk. He has his own style that is nothing like anyone else’s, and he truly cares about inspiring would-be writers.

What is your favorite book of all time and why?
Unwind by Neal Shusterman. He is unbelievably gifted and I truly belief that book is sci-fi at its best.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?
Hopefully with a few more books under my belt and a steady following of readers.
