EXCERPT

“How do you do that?” I asked, finding my voice. I looked around the dance floor, at all the people frozen like 3D photographs. It didn’t make sense that I wasn’t scared by the situation at hand, but fear didn’t factor into my emotional state at all. I also wondered what it would be like to walk through the crowd and note all their bodily contortions and facial expressions, but I held back. At the moment I was more interested in hearing what this man had to say. “How did you make everything stop?”

“As to how I do what I do, I can only tell you that I do it. I know someone that can explain the how better than I. As to this,” he waggled a finger toward the still figures in the room, “this is all you. I can only help you … amplify what you had inside you to begin with.”

It was my turn to laugh, but it was humorless and harsh. “What are you talking about?”

“You have felt different all your life, no?”

“Sure. But doesn’t everybody?” I answered with an eye roll and looked around the room again. “Look at these morons. They’re all playing dress up, hiding their real selves from each other. But the truth is they’re desperate to find someone to love them. Hoping they’ll be important to someone, anyone, because they sure as hell don’t feel important to themselves. Hoping they’ll actually matter. Hoping that someone can take away the emptiness they feel every time they look in the mirror.”

He shook his head. “You are talking about yourself, not them. And they are not all like that. They are not the lifeless paper dolls you think they are, not even the ones trying so hard to stand out. And neither are you.”

His words confused me, and I felt myself growing angry. “Who are you?” I didn’t like the things he made me feel anymore, and I longed for the simplicity of the liquored-up daze I’d enjoyed earlier. I wanted to run away from him, but in the same moment I realized that nothing could have made me turn away from this strange man.

“My name is Kasimir Korsak. My friends call my Kasey. I would very much like to include you in that group.”

I shook my head. “If you know so much about me, you would know that I don’t have friends.” I put as much disdain into the last word as I could. I might want to find out more about the things that were happening, but that didn’t mean I trusted him. “Besides, what possible reason do I have to believe anything you say?”

His eyes were still steady on mine when he spoke. “You already trust me, Blue. You do not want to admit it because I am a stranger, but deep down you believe me because you hear truth in my words. You look around the room and see truth. You are different. Special.” He held out his hands, palms up in a gesture of openness. “You are like me, only you have not learned how to use your abilities yet.”

Abilities? I gaped at him. What the hell does that mean?

We stood in the strange, echoless silence, neither of us taking our eyes off the other. I wanted his words to be true. I wanted the differentness I’d always felt to be something special, wanted it with an urgency that pierced through the numbness. In the few moments I’d spent with this man I’d felt more emotions than I’d felt in years.

The realization finally brought forth fear, but it also brought excitement, and I wanted more. If his words were true, and he and I were alike, maybe that meant I actually belonged somewhere.

“I can show you if you let me.” He smiled again and as we stared at one another, thoughts that weren’t mine raced through my head.

Give me a chance to show you. There are others like us. You do not have to be alone anymore.

“Why should I?”

“What are your options?” He smiled. “Someone once said, ‘I may never be what I want to be, what I ought to be, but how will I know unless I try?’ That is all I am asking you to do, try.”

“Who said that?”

He grinned wider. “A superhero.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re kidding, right? This isn’t a fucking comic book.”

MY THOUGHTS

I WAS SO EXCITED TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW THIS BOOK. I LOVE BOOKS THAT HAVE CHARACTERS WITH POWERS! I DID HAVE A ROUGH TIME GETTING INTO THIS BOOK FOR THE FIRST 10 PAGES OR SO. IT SEEMED TO BE A BIT SCATTERED IN MY OPINION. AROUND THE PAGE 10 MARK, IT WAS ALMOST LIKE THE AUTHOR HAD TAKEN A BREAK AND THEN CAME BACK WITH GUSTO, BECAUSE EVERYTHING CLICKED AND STARTING WORKING TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY. THERE WAS SOME AWESOME POWERS MIXED IN WITH UNRESOLVED ISSUES, AS WELL AS AN OUTSIDER IN A GROUP OF A RAGTAG "FAMILY". OF COURSE, THERE IS ALSO A BIG BADDIE TO BEAT. THE DRAMA, THE FAST-PACE, BADASSNESS, AND A BIT OF ROMANCE TIED IT ALL UP WITH A POWER-FILLED-BOW! I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK AND CANNOT WAIT UNTIL I CAN GET MY HANDS ON BOOK 2!!!
I GIVE THIS BOOK 4.5 STARS!

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What made you want to write?

I was a bit precocious as a child, reading at a very young age, and an only child. My books were my best friends and I’ve been making up stories as far back as I can remember. I don’t think it ever occurred to me to NOT want to write. I’ve always described my thoughts as a play or movie I get to direct, and the natural progression of that is to put them down on paper.

What genre(s) do you write in?

Although I have manuscripts for a multitude of genres, I seem to always come back to science fiction
and fantasy. I really enjoy comic books, graphic novels, and Noir fiction. There’s an intrinsic need inside me that searches for a simpler world, one where heroes exist. Again, it was a natural progression for me to write those kinds of stories since it’s what I love.

What was the first book you ever wrote?

I wrote a book of poetry when I was around ten years old. I’d share some of it with you but I’m not sure what happened to it (maybe my mom still has it!). It was probably terrible, though! I continued to write a lot of poetry through my youth, and I still write poetry and prose fairly regularly. It’s a very open form of expression and I enjoy the depth it can bring.

What is your favorite out of all of your books, published or not?

That’s an easy question. The Blue Effect, hands down. It has everything I love in a story.

And what makes this your favorite? A certain scene, character, plot?

The main character, Blue Brennan, is near and dear to me. I love everything about her. If you ever
wanted to know about me, Rose Shababy, all you have to do is read her book and you’ll find me right
there, albeit a bit exaggerated. Her inner dialogue is mine, her fears and anxieties are mine, her hopes
and dreams are mine. Writing her was a catharsis, and gave me a new appreciation for the person I am. Through her, I learned to love myself a little more.

What is your daily routine when it comes to your writing?

I work a day job, so I don’t really have a daily routine. I try to set aside at least one full day on the
weekend to write, sneak in little tidbits at work, and occasional evenings. But I’m always thinking about my stories, no matter what I’m doing.

What is something that you struggle with when it comes to writing?

Finding the time, making the time, and occasionally organizing my thoughts.

What is your favorite thing about writing?

I like the creativity, how you can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything in a story. Whatever you want, you can make it happen.

Where do you get your ideas for writing?

All over, but almost all of them start with a question; What if… you can fill in the blank. For my book, Shadows of Night it started with: What if a man was trapped and injured in a small space. What would happen to his state of mind? Would he go crazy? The Blue Effect started with: What if a guy thought he had superpowers and everyone thought he was crazy, but in the end, they found out he really did?

Who is your author inspiration?

One of my biggest inspirations is also one of my best friends, author Jennifer Malone Wright. She’s one of the hardest working gals I know, and even though she doesn’t realize it, she pushes me to try to keep up with her. Not that I can, but I try!

What is your favorite book of all time?

Very, very hard question to answer, as I love many books for many reasons. If I had to pick just one book though, I’d probably pick The Stand by Stephen King. It’s an epic novel, with a plethora of characters and a graphic novel sensibility that I find strongly appealing.

Where do you see your writing career in 5 years?

I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing, but as far as a career, who knows what the future holds! My plan is to continue to write and put my books out there for readers. It’s more than a hobby, it’s part of who I am. If that brings about financial success as an author, I’d be thrilled, but I’m just as thrilled to write the stories and hear from the readers who like them, no matter the size of my audience. I do hope I’ll have at least the second story arc in my Renegade Heroes series finished in the next five years, and be working on the third. I have so much fun writing them!

MEET THE AUTHOR

Rose Shababy and her family reside in eastern Washington State. Rose grew up in the Northwest but swears she’s going to move to warmer climates someday. She’s claimed this for over 20 years, however, and has yet to move more than 75 miles away from her mother.
Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider.
Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and only one still lives at home.
Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending cozy weekend days watching Syfy movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her husband.
If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with coke-bottle glasses.

SYNOPSIS

When Cassondra took Wilma’s energy, Lena’s mission changed. Only revenge matters now. For the past year, Lena and her small army have tried to finish what they started, beginning with Earth: close the lines between worlds and end Exemplar’s hold on humanity. Unfortunately, the task is daunting. But unlike before, Lena has no problem pulling the trigger. As soon as her army takes care of threats in Earth, Lena goes back to Arcus—only to find out where the next war will be. Tarek will do anything to mend Lena’s heart, even while she pushes him away. Only death for a death seems to ease the pain tearing her apart. But as much as he desires to heal the woman he loves, Tarek has to make sure Arcus stays safe from extermination. After an attack, refugees Tarek has sworn to protect are terrified Exemplian authority will destroy their new home. Not able to defeat Exemplar’s direct assault, only one solution remains—a solution that will more than likely end in catastrophe: take the war to Exemplar and shut down their power source. Lena doesn’t see disaster for her army—she sees victory and demands to go, refusing to miss a chance to kill more Exemplians. While Lena hopes to save Wilma’s energy during the impossible mission, Tarek fears Lena will lose more than the war. If she fails, Lena may lose herself completely.

EXCERPT

They thought hiding in plain sight a brilliant idea. Set up camp in large cities where thousands of unassuming witnesses kept them safe from open attacks. Perfect, right? Surely, the rogue army wouldn't think to involve innocent people. Their first mistake. No matter how big the city or how many people saw us, we had no problem killing Exemplians. Why? We had Winston, the mind-scrubbing champion. Cheveyo, Earth's Warden, believed this was the last nest. We hoped the Exemplian pricks would give up after tonight and move on to another world, another world my small army would follow them to. But this last trip to Earth… I wanted to make sure they remembered me. I looked toward the sky before opening the café door and turning off my contego suit so the glow wouldn't show through my sweatshirt. Exemplian satellites no doubt pointed in my direction. Whatever. Wouldn't want them to miss the show, anyway. I tugged my hood lower to cover more of my face and walked in. After stomping snow from my boots, I trudged between tables, dodging internet addicts hunched over their computers. For show, really. The three Guides, a middle-aged man, woman, and a muscle head, sitting by the window knew what I was as soon as the tinkling bell announced my presence, probably before then. I felt them, too. Their static crinkled in my head so loud, I had to grit my teeth and force myself to walk to the counter. From the mirrored wall behind the clerk, I watched them scrutinizing me over their TracFones and café au laits. "Puis-je vous aider?" The clerk snapped his fingers in my face and asked a second time when I ignored him to keep staring in the mirror. "Oh, um…café noir, s'il vous plait." "Oui." With any luck, the barista wouldn't ask me anything else. Winston only gave me the "Black coffee, please" line to memorize. While waiting for my order, I pretended to admire the pastries in the glass encasement under the counter. We'd been tracking them in Quebec for the better part of two months. These nesters were craftier, moving from spot to spot, but still easy to find. That it took us under a couple months to get their schedules down made the Exemplian authority look sloppy. When the guy handed over the coffee, I gave him a coin. He shook his head, saying a few more things I didn't understand. I shrugged, getting the gist when he wagged the money in my face, speaking much slower. Funny. No matter how drawn out his words were, I wouldn't get it. I handed him a couple more coins then turned from the register, giving the Guide trio a nervous glance. The idiots were already on their phones–more than likely letting their Protectors know they were on the move–and collecting their stuff to follow. Exemplians thought anyone not born on their world a moron. More than likely, they probably figured I was some clueless recycled Guide, living another life, right here in freezing-as-fuck Quebec. Their second mistake. The trio had followed me all morning until I gave them the slip fifteen minutes ago. How fortunate were they that I happened to waltz into the very café they were in? Seriously, total dumbasses. My heart hurt. Dumbass. Every time I even thought about the word, Wilma's face flashed in my mind. Her little pet name for me when I pissed her off. God, I missed her. I walked down the busy street at a decent clip, brushing tears away. This wasn't the time. Now, I'd make every single person who followed me pay a little more for her death. Make them pay over and over... I turned the corner, off Rue Saint-Jean, away from the crowd shopping for Christmas. Slush soaked through my boots, numbing my toes. The late evening drizzle infiltrated my thick hoodie, too, drenching me from hair to skin. I ignored it, used to physical discomfort, and stopped to take a few sips of my steaming drink, giving the Guides a chance to catch up. Gross. The rest of the coffee landed in a snowbank. Still hated it. When the fuzz returned, I got moving. Cheery sounds of shoppers and holiday music wafted after me as I strode farther, careful not to go too fast, lest they lose me again. The streetlamps broken by yours truly a few hours before helped keep them confused, giving me the edge I'd need. Cell phone lights glowed behind me, though not putting much of a dent in the black. Unfortunately, complete darkness didn't hide the fuzz getting stronger in my head, something I had grown to hate yet tolerate. Hopefully their Protectors were close so we could end this soon. Arrogance happened to be the main weakness all Synod Exemplians had. No matter how many nests we'd destroyed, every single idiot we encountered believed they were smart enough to take us on–once they figured out who we were. That would be their third mistake. Exemplians were a quick study, always predictable. After a while, their stupidity bore me. But killing them never got old. Ever. I stumbled when I turned around, making sure they noticed. Their chins lifted, and they were close enough for me to see smiles on their faces. I loved this part. When they believed their nervous prey finally figured out people stalked her. Loved it. I moved faster toward the one unbroken streetlight in front of an alley crammed with industrial-sized garbage cans. The smell coming from the frozen trash was way more pleasant than the fuzz clogging my head. I pretended to talk on my phone, adding a lot of scared flavor to my voice. Stupid Guides ate it up, my fear giving them the courage to come closer. As soon as they were a few feet in front of me, I slid back my hood and gave them a smile of my own. "Oh, no." One sputtered that a few times, stopping while the two others, though not smiling anymore, kept coming at me.

ONE-CLICK

EXCERPT

My father heads out the front door and I reach for the remote, turning up the television.
My eyes widen in horror and the color in my cheeks vanish when I see a sketch of Madeline flash up on the screen. How is it possible that she is the fugitive? I remember leaving the police station with her, but she hadn’t been in handcuffs. If she was a fugitive, why didn’t anyone stop her? The girl had been sitting in the waiting area, same as me. I assumed one of her parents worked at the station as an officer or a clerk. It’s where I always waited for my father. She wasn’t the first person I’d ever met but no one had ever been a suspect in a homicide! Was I an idiot for letting her get into my car? My stomach sinks. If Dad isn’t pissed at me before, he’s certain to be now. How am I going to explain this to him?
"The young woman seen here is believed to be armed and dangerous. If you see her, do not approach her. Contact your local law enforcement immediately." The news anchor changes to another story.
I flip through two more channels but the reports have just ended. There’s no additional information I can gather from the news. I shut off the television. It can't be real. I down my eggs in one breath and head up the stairs to my bedroom in a rush.

Synopsis

Cat Kincaid is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.

Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. However, the beautiful, red haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

Excerpt

Before she could fire, Kerry let off another barrage of plasma bolts into the river, then leapt toward her and ripped the severed tentacle from her leg. It flapped around on the wet grass. She scrambled to her knees, still slightly winded and fired at the hideous thing. The foliage around it flared for a moment with an eerie green flame and the tentacle shrivelled into a slimy black mass, emitting a pungent odour and causing her to gag for a moment.

“It seems I was mistaken about the creature being dead.” Kerry prodded the smouldering mass with his boot and looked across over the water. “It is now.” He leaned down and grasped her wrist to haul her to her feet. “Are you hurt?”

“No, I don’t think so.” Her shoulder was sore and probably bruised but she’d live. She tried to control her shivering. The incident affected her more than she wanted to admit. Kerry’s proximity, naked to the waist, his lithe body shining from the water droplets that still clung to his skin, his legs swathed in tight black leather, did nothing to help. The last thing she wanted was for him to realise how scared she’d been when she thought a snake attacked her. “Thanks. That was close. It would have been a bit ironic if I’d been killed by the same creature I saved you from.”

She realized he still grasped her wrist. She tried to move away, but he pulled her back, obliging her to turn to him.

“You are trembling.”

“I’m fine.”

“No,” he said. “You’re not.” He pulled her closer and his eyes softened, his gaze holding her mesmerized. She opened her mouth to try to speak, but in the same instant he put his hand under her chin and his lips closed over hers.
