Review~Voices & Whispers by R.E. Rowe

I was given the opportunity to read both of these books recently. I wasn't sure what to expect from books with a reincarnation twist to it. Though I was skeptical, I was very happy that I had this opportunity! What follows is each book and it's summary, as well as my thoughts on each one. Before you go pick up Voices (which is free), you need to go ahead and buy Whispers (only $0.99) while you're there. Voices does end on a cliffhanger, but Whispers picks up immediately afterwards though, so there's no time lapse...you get to just continue on in this great journey! Here we go....

Voices
Reincarnation Book 1
by R.E. Rowe

SYNOPSIS

In a small town in Arkansas, two lives that seemingly have nothing in common will converge and change each other forever. A brilliant but tormented street artist and an ex-track star whose career was cut short by a heart condition.

Aimee DeLuca had a promising athletic career before her heart gave out during a high school track and field contest. Aimee struggles to find her was after spending time with a deceased grandmother during a near death experience. Reizo Rush is a street artist whose torment fuels his desire to add color to the gray walls of the city. But Reizo's tagging and the two voices only he hears land him in perpetual trouble with both his teachers and the law.

During a chance encounter, the two quickly find out they have much more in common than love. When they stumble upon a century-old storm cellar hidden underground on Aimee's uncle's ranch, they unearth a cellar full of artifacts and a hundred-year-old Will. Once the news of the discovery leaks out, a drug-dealing teen and a mysterious soul names General are determined to bury the truth along with anyone who gets in their way.

MY THOUGHTS

The story of Ames and Reiz is one that was beautiful, heart breaking, upsetting, and loving all at the same time. So much happened in this book that I cannot say very much without giving spoilers, which is something that I do not do while writing reviews. I do suggest that you stick with the story, as the first bit is a little slow. If you will stick with it, then you will get a story unlike any that I have ever read. This is an AWESOME story that you will not be disappointed in reading!!
DEFINITELY A 5 STAR BOOK!!

WHISPERS
Reincarnation Book 2
by R.E. Rowe

SYNOPSIS

In this paranormal thriller sequel to Voices, the war to create a prefect reincarnation system begins.

General believes the existing system is already perfect: to know "joy" every soul must experience "suffering". But a rogue soul named Carmina believes the system is outdated and flawed. She is determined to prove that joy can exist without suffering.

When Carmina and her team of reincarnated teenagers hack the system to change its outdated rules, Reizo is recruited to stop them. But Reizo could care less about rules or any ridiculous system until a mysterious soul named General leaves him no choice.

Follow Carmina, Reizo and Aimee in their extraordinary journey to make the reincarnation system perfect.

MY THOUGHTS

WOW! Talk about some action!! Whispers was packed full of it! We pick up in Whispers right where we left off in Voices. Here we get to go on a journey along with some old friends, and also meet some new ones. It's an amazing journey too! I found a few grammatical and spelling errors in this book, but nothing that messes up the flow of the book. You seriously need to check this book out!!
I GIVE 4.5 STARS, ONLY DUE TO THE ERRORS I FOUND, OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE 5 STARS.

My father heads out the front door and I reach for the remote, turning up the television.
My eyes widen in horror and the color in my cheeks vanish when I see a sketch of Madeline flash up on the screen. How is it possible that she is the fugitive? I remember leaving the police station with her, but she hadn’t been in handcuffs. If she was a fugitive, why didn’t anyone stop her? The girl had been sitting in the waiting area, same as me. I assumed one of her parents worked at the station as an officer or a clerk. It’s where I always waited for my father. She wasn’t the first person I’d ever met but no one had ever been a suspect in a homicide! Was I an idiot for letting her get into my car? My stomach sinks. If Dad isn’t pissed at me before, he’s certain to be now. How am I going to explain this to him?
"The young woman seen here is believed to be armed and dangerous. If you see her, do not approach her. Contact your local law enforcement immediately." The news anchor changes to another story.
I flip through two more channels but the reports have just ended. There’s no additional information I can gather from the news. I shut off the television. It can't be real. I down my eggs in one breath and head up the stairs to my bedroom in a rush.

Touching Eternity (Prequel)

Before Fallon was created to destroy. Before love became the ultimate weapon of destruction. There was Amalie and the horror that started a revolution that tore the fabric of humanity, of everything standing in the balance between power, hope and survival. Amalie has one wish, one gnawing desire — she wants to die. She wants to leave this world behind with its pain and darkness. She wants to finally breathe. But Amalie is a prisoner, a disease, not fit for life. She is unwanted, unnatural. She is defective, something useless and broken. Her own mother hadn’t wanted her. Her father hated her. The world shunned her and the only person she had ever loved, truly and with all her heart and soul, couldn’t stand the sight of her, couldn’t stand the thought of ever being with her. She repulsed him. Her insanity disgusted him. He’d forgotten her. He’d left her behind, deserted and abandoned her to a madman hell bent on crushing her, stealing her soul and shattering her will. But what if she’s finally given hope? A reason to live? Can Amalie finally accept the hand offering so much for so little in return? Can she love again when she has nothing left to give? Can she finally be free?

Touching Fire (book 2)

Finding my past was supposed to end the nightmare.
Only it was just the beginning.
Entrusting the fate of the world, not to mention my and Isaiah’s life to a father I had never met is a big leap of faith on my part. But it’s a necessary risk. Ashton is the key to protecting Isaiah and keeping me out of Garrison’s clutches. He is also the only one who can tell me what I am, except what I learns is that I am from a world that is far more dangerous than anyone could have possibly imagined.
As my powers grow out of control, I must pick between my mortality and a legacy that does not include Isaiah. I must summon the courage to face a destiny that will test the boundaries of everything I have ever known. But most of all, I must protect Isaiah from the monster within myself and trust the man whose toxic blood runs through my veins.
Danger builds as power clashes between two evils, both seeking me to tip the scales to eternal darkness and suffering.
Can humanity rise to face an ancient calling to which I am powerless to stop? Can I protect those I cares about or will their blood forever stain my hands?
Touch Vengeance. Touch Malice. Touch Fire.

Excerpts

LOST TO ME, Jamie Blair
www.jamieblairauthor.com

Thunder rumbled and shook the house. The rain picked up again, falling in sideways sheets that blew through the balcony doors. A few cool drops landed on my legs, sending shivers through me. Kolton got up and closed the doors. With his face silhouetted in the candlelight’s flicker, he took my breath away. He grinned. “What?” “Nothing.” I picked up the dice and rolled as he lay back down on the bed. Under his t-shirt, the muscles in his chest and arms shifted, as he got comfortable with my pillow again. An overwhelming urge to run my hand over his chest made me shut my eyes for a second. My lips tingled with anticipation of feeling his again. I wanted to chuck the game onto the floor and grab him. But, I didn’t. I couldn’t. When his eyes captured mine, I knew he would. “You win,” he said, and shoved the game pieces off the board. He took my arm and led me over to him, rolling onto his back and scooting under me. “Lure me up here and make me play games with you.” He shook his head, smiling.

FROSTBITE (Touch of Frost #1), Lynn Rush
www.lynnrush.com

“You barely know me, Zach.” And I was so the wrong girl. He just didn’t know it. “I’m trying to get to know you. You won’t let me.” His dark eyebrow quirked up, and his dimple flared as he offered me his totally addicting half-smile. He was right, though. So trained to stay protected I’ve pretty much forgotten how to…be. So controlled. So… I inched closer, which probably looked ridiculous as I scooted across the sand, but if I was going to take a chance, Zach was going to be that chance. His eyes widened, and he leaned forward as his grip on my hand tightened. Despite the sand mixed in with our hands, his warmth still crept up my arm. But it also left a trail of goosebumps. Do. Not. Freeze. Him. I drew in a breath, then pushed that last inch separating us. My reward was the softest pair of lips. The contact, as light as it was, sent a shockwave through my chest, rattling down my spine.

CRUSHED, Dawn Rae Miller
www.dawnraemiller.com

Calista pounces on my lap, but not before messing up my hair. Her wild curls tickle my skin and smell like chlorine. Like summer. It’s so hot. The sun beats on us. I want to go back under the umbrella, but she won’t let me, so I nuzzle her neck and tell myself to remember this. The smell of sunblock and the weight of Calista pressed against me. In a week, we’ll be back at Harker, and Cal and I will go on like we always do: friends but nothing more. With sure fingers, I tug on the strings of her bikini top and it falls off. She giggles and tosses it aside. I cup my hands over her firm tits. The camera she set up clicks. Keeps clicking as we fall backward onto the chaise, not talking. Every breath I take mirrors hers, and our naked torsos move in unison. My eyes close, and I focus on the feel of her hands on my skin. They leave sparks of electricity in their wake. A lazy smile stretches across her face as she lifts my hand to her lips and sucks on the tips of my fingers. My body explodes with fire. She notices and traces her fingers lower, teasing me. I close my eyes again and inhale deeply. One breath. Two breaths. Three. Calista rolls off me and kneels next to my elbow. She lays her head on the edge of the chaise and bats her blue eyes. I should stop her, but I don’t. I never do.

THE ACADEMY, Evangeline Anderson
http://www.evangelineanderson.com

That night I changed in the closet as usual and skipped the evening shower time before RLO. North made a comment about how I would start to stink if I kept this up but I ignored him and tried not to watch when he casually disrobed in preparation for his own shower. I couldn’t help noticing, though, how broad his shoulders were and how muscular his back was. And when he came back to the room, his dark blond hair slicked back and beads of water dotting his chest, I admit I looked a little longer than was proper. Luckily for me, North seemed oblivious to my scrutiny. We said goodnight and crawled into our respective beds after he turned out the light. Then I waited. And waited. And waited some more. Finally I heard the tiny chirrup of my chronometer and knew it was time. Slowly, being careful not to make a sound, I slipped from beneath my covers. Reaching under my bed, I got my towel which was rolled into a tight cylinder and found the tiny shampoo pellet I’d hidden there earlier—one of the few luxuries I’d brought from home. Moving as silently as a mouse, I crept to the door, put my hand on the knob and— “That’s a really bad idea, you know.” North’s soft, deep voice from the darkness startled me so much I nearly screamed. I turned slowly to see him sitting up in bed, his tiny handheld light illuminating his face. “What are you talking about?” I tried to sound sleepy and cross. “I’m just going to use the fresher. I had too much fruit drink at dinner.” “Liar. You’re going to try and sneak a shower.” North frowned at me. “But now isn’t a good time.” “Why not?” I demanded, too exasperated to lie anymore. “It’s past midnight—everyone should be asleep.” “You’d think so, wouldn’t you?” he said dryly. “But they’re not. The dorm monitor never goes to bed before one AM and he always makes one more round of the freshers before he turns in. If he catches you out after RLO for any reason other than to take a quick piss, you’ll get licks. Not to mention the fact that Broward could show up at any time and catch you naked and alone—not good.” I felt the most unladylike urge to swear. Instead I bit my tongue until I tasted a faint coppery hint of blood. “What am I suppose to do then?” “You’re supposed to shower with everyone else like the rest of us do.” “Well, I can’t,” I snapped. “And I won’t. If I would’ve known about the facilities here, I never would have come in the first place.” “So you’d give up your chance to be in the Space Corps just because you don’t like showering with other guys?” North raised an eyebrow at me. “Yes…no…I don’t know.” I ran a hand through my short hair in frustration. My short, dirty hair. Honestly, if I didn’t get a shower soon I felt like I was going to go out of my mind. I couldn’t stand this state of filth and grime much longer. “This isn’t really about modesty, is it?” North’s voice got softer and his eyes narrowed as he looked at me. “It’s something else, isn’t it, shrimp?” “It’s nothing,” I said shortly. “Just go back to bed.” He frowned. “So you can get murdered by Broward or caught by the dorm monitor? I don’t think so.” “You can’t stop me,” I said, giving him a fierce glare. “So just turn over in bed and pretend you don’t see me.” “No.” He shook his head. “Look, just wait a little longer and I’ll go with you.” “North,” I said in exasperation. “I appreciate your concern but I don’t want to take a shower with you anymore than I want to take one with the rest of our dorm-mates.” “I’m not going to shower with you.” He was the one who sounded exasperated now. “I’m going to watch your back.” “What? Why?” I put a hand on my hip. “Why would you do that for me? Because I helped you with that equation?” “Maybe.” North shrugged, looking uncomfortable. “Or maybe because I know about having something you want to hide—something about your body you’re ashamed of.” “I’m not ashamed,” I said stiffly. “I’m just…different. That’s all.” “I know about being different, too,” he said in a low voice. “How could you know about being different or ashamed?” I demanded. “Just look at you—you’re perfect.” He laughed dryly. “Thanks, shorty. But I wasn’t talking about myself.” “Who then?” I came back to my bed and sat on it facing him. He shrugged again and looked away, not meeting my eyes. “Someone I used to know. Someone I…cared about.” “Who—?” I began but he cut me off. “Look, I don’t want to talk about it, okay?” His eyes blazed fiercely in the dim light. “I’m offering to help you break the rules and get a shower—do you want my help or not?” I bit my lip and looked at him uncertainly. “And you won’t…won’t look at me?” North barked a laugh. “You may have a pretty face, shrimp, but I don’t think I’ll have to hold myself back from checking out another guy. No, I won’t look.” “All right, then,” I said with as much dignity as I could muster. “I accept your offer.”

LOVE, LEX, Avery Aster
http://averyaster.com

*set-up: Lex has been arrested and is in jail. Officer Ford Gotti is making her nervous.   He kept on watching me. A guard walked back and forth checking the cells. I used that time to ask myself two important questions. One, was I nervous to talk to him by myself? Hells yeah! And two, could I keep my mouth shut, not telling the truth without my besties here to talk for me? Maybe. Maybe not. Suddenly, from the top of my head to my tippy toes, a tingle started. It wasn’t from the synthetic orange fabric I wore. Oh no. This was a sensation of hyperawareness. I’d felt self conscious before but this was ridiculous. His expressive face, catalog model-worthy for sure, talked to me. His mind was racing in judgments about who I was and what I’d done. His accusatory stares infuriated me. For some unknown reason, I wanted his approval more than anything. I ached for him to believe me and that today was an accident, a misunderstanding. Fudge, I didn’t even know him. I shouldn’t give a flip what he thought about me. I didn’t care how the TV portrayed me or what Birdie and her fans thought of me either. This explosion wasn’t only putting my plus-sized bum on the line but my besties boney butts as well. I had to stick to the story. After the guard had gone and it was just me alone in my cell, Officer Gotti stepped closer. Both of us remained silent. The room spun as my WWF, Scorpion King, Hulk on a Harley, inked up demi-god mirage in the desert returned. My vision blurred. Confused? Heck yeah. Tummy tossing? I felt oddly aroused. I know! At a time like this, how could I be…horny? I just blew up Mom, and my two besties had left me. My hormones rocketed into overdrive. I forced a smile to show he didn’t make me nervous. Heat came off my skin. Slowly I wiped the perspiration off the back of my neck by knotting my hair into a bun. That was a ladylike trick I’d learned at Avon Porter. “You okay? Now that your friends are gone.” “Woo, it’s warm in here is all.” I was scared as hell but I wouldn’t show it. “It sure is.” He grinned, focusing on my face.

KISS THE SKY, Krista & Becca Ritchie
http://kbritchie.com

I wrap the cloth around my waist. It hangs low so she has view of my defined muscles. I make time for the gym with Loren and his half-brother, but I’ve always been in good shape. I grew up wanting to reach the peak of physical and mental perfection. It’s an unattainable goal. But one I set. One I seek. People hope to touch the sky. I dream of kissing it. Rose spins back towards the sink. She uses the iron to curl loose waves in her straight hair. Most men would be scared of her—gripping a hot weapon. My cock begins to throb as I watch her through the mirror. She breathes heavily, trying not to pay attention to me, but it’s a little difficult. I’m six-foot-four. I’m twice her size. She’s small, feminine in comparison to my body that could cloak her easily.

The Key (The True Reign Series Book 1) by Jennifer Anne Davis

Book Synopsis:

Within these pages lie kingdoms with castles and princes who fall in love with fair maidens, but make no mistake−this is no fairytale.

His father's kingdom is on the brink of upheaval and at the center of it all is an ordinary girl who could be the key to its undoing. When faced with the ultimate choice, will he choose the girl he's falling in love with or the kingdom he has sworn to protect?

An ordinary girl with an extraordinary past... All she wants is to be free. What she doesn't realize is that freedom comes with a price she can't afford to pay. She's forced to accept the proposal of a prince she despises, even though her heart belongs to someone else... his brother.

Seventeen-year-old Rema lives in a brutal kingdom where travel between regions is forbidden, people are starving, and looking at someone the wrong way can mean death. Nineteen-year-old Darmik is the king's son and Commander of the King's Army. He spends his days roving the island, doing his father's bidding and trying to maintain control over the people.

When a chance encounter throws Rema and Darmik together, they share an instantaneous connection, but any sort of relationship between them is strictly forbidden. Darmik's brother, the Crown Prince, notices Darmik's interest in Rema and, in a calculated, political move, blackmails her. Faced with an impossible choice, Rema is forced to sacrifice her heart in order to save her family.

As Rema is taken to the palace with the Crown Prince, Darmik confronts the growing rumor that a legitimate blood heir to the throne exists and is trying to overthrow Darmik's family. In Darmik's quest to hunt down and kill the threat, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Locked in the king's castle, Rema finds herself a key player in a massive power struggle. When Darmik shows up, she's not sure if she can trust him. The line between friends, enemies, and loyalty becomes blurred. As truths are unlocked, Rema understands that she just might be the key to finding the rightful heir and restoring peace to the kingdom... if she can manage to stay alive long enough.

My Review:

This is book 1 of 3 and is not a standalone book. The entire

series is available so there’s no waiting for the next in the

 series!

I listened to this book on audio and the first thing that I

noticed about the book is that I had to slow down the

narration speed to half-speed. The narrator, Michelle

Michaels, was speaking pretty fast and I had a hard time

keeping up with her at first. She has a very good accent for

 this story, just talks fast.

The book starts right into the middle of a big, bad situation.

You have a King dying, a Queen sending her daughter away

to try to survive while she loses her life, a trusted man of the

court running off with the infant Princess. It is pretty much off

and running from the beginning. Things slow down a bit after

the book jumps 17 years to the future.

We now have a young woman who has a life with her Aunt

and Uncle and her best friend, Bren that she can out race on

a horse every time. I’m not going to put any spoilers in here,

since I hate it when people do that to me, but things start to

go up and downhill quickly for Rema.

She then meets a couple of Princes, one of which is

awesome for a time, the other is a jerk from the get-go. At

this point, there is love, betrayal, political games, dismissals,

dungeons, rebels, and a cliff-hanger ending. Thankfully, book

2 “Red” is already out and we won’t have to be beating our

head against the wall over the cliffhanger, but it is still there.

Fair warning! Buy book 2 before finishing book 1.

When it comes to rating, I rate the narration of the story

about 3.5 STARS but the story overall I will give a GOOD 4

STARS!!

Wish you weren't by Sherrie Petersen

Print Length: 151 Pages
Audio Length: 3 Hours 9 Minutes

Review:

Wish you weren't was a good story about a preteen boy learning a valuable lesson. It involves time travel, family issues, sibling fights, and wishing on a star. It was a pretty good story, especially for middle grade level. I would definitely recommend for children with siblings as well. Letting children of the mid-grade level either read or listen to this story would be a good way to teach them a lesson of appreciating what they have. Especially in this day and age, the younger generation pretty much expects everything to be "their" way. I think that this is something that every person from about 7 and up needs to hear, no matter the format. The narrator did a pretty good job, the only thing was that sometimes he didn't have much feeling in his voice. Over all it was a good story that I definitely would listen to/read again. I give this book 4 STARS!!
